Are you ready for the greatest IEEE leadership challenge of your career?

IEEE Region 1 will be electing the 2024/2025 Region 1 Director-Elect during the 2023 IEEE elections and we are searching for a few excellent candidates.

If you are interested in serving as the Region 1 Director, or wish to nominate a qualified colleague, contact Bala Prasanna, Chair of the IEEE Region 1 Nominations Committee, and complete a candidate nomination package by October 15, 2022. The subject line of the email must read “IEEE Region 1 Director Elect Nomination Enclosed”. The complete nomination package by October 15, 2022 must include the nomination form (see separate tab above).

    What is the Position?

    The elected nominee will serve as Region Director/Delegate Elect in 2024-2025, and Region Director in 2026-27. The IEEE Region Director leads the Region Board of Governors and oversees activities for the members of IEEE in the Northeastern US, and chair a region committee of more than 40 volunteers from 22 sections. The Region 1 Delegate/Director is also a member of the IEEE Board of Directors, the highest governing body in the IEEE. She or he represents the members of the Region in the IEEE Assembly (Section I-200 of the IEEE Bylaws) as a voting delegate. In addition, Region Delegate/Directors are voting members of the Member and Geographic (MGA) Board and MGA Assembly as a voting delegate. Those Region Delegate/Directors in Region 1-6 are also voting members of the IEEE-USA Board. Both the two years as Director-Elect and the two years as Immediate Past Director require significant high level leadership and service to the region and at the major board level.     Appendix A – Section 8 of the Region 1 Bylaws

    8.0 REGION 1 DIRECTOR-ELECT/DELEGATE-ELECT SLATE SELECTION

    8.1 The Nominations Committee, prior to March 1 of even-numbered years preceding an election year, shall solicit from the Councils and Sections recommendations for candidates to serve as the Region Delegate-Elect/Director-Elect. The recommendations shall be due by June 1 of the year preceding an election year.

    8.2 The Nominations Committee shall give due consideration to all candidates submitted to it by June 1 of the year preceding the election year, but need not restrict its consideration to only such candidates. All meetings of the Nominations Committee shall be held in executive session (See Section 2.5)

    8.3 The Nominations Committee shall select no fewer than two nor more than three nominees whose names will be forwarded to the Assembly. The Nominations Committee shall notify said nominees of their selection, no later than June 10 of the year prior to the one in which the Region Director-Elect/Delegate-Elect is elected.

    8.4 At the BoG Annual Meeting in even-numbered years, the Nominations Committee will formally recommend to the Assembly, no fewer than two nor more than three nominees for the position of Region 1 Director-Elect/Delegate-Elect. Record of a majority Nominations Committee vote, a summary of the nominees’ qualifications and a statement of the nominees’ willingness to serve shall be necessary to submit a recommendation to the Assembly.

    8.5 In addition to the recommendations of the Nominating Committee, the Assembly will accept additional nominations as follows:

    8.5.1 No nominations from the floor will be permitted;

    8.5.2 Candidates who have been considered by the Nominations Committee, but whose names will not be forwarded to the Assembly, may be nominated by the petition of seven Assembly members no later than July 1 prior to the Assembly meeting at which the candidates for Region Director-Elect/Delegate-Elect are chosen.

    8.5.3 The signatures of seven Assembly members must accompany each such additional nomination.

    8.5.4 Such additional nominations may be submitted by e-mail, fax, or written document to the Nominations Committee.

    8.5.5 The Nominations Committee will, no later than 20 days prior to the Region Assembly meeting, inform the Assembly of all nominees (those selected by the Nominations Committee and those nominated by petition) that qualify for consideration. Said notification shall include copies of the candidates’ biographies and statement of their willingness to serve.

    Petitions for office after the Assembly meeting

    The petitions process for offices after the R1 Assembly meeting follow the established IEEE guidelines found here and are as follows:

    Individual voting members may propose, by petition, names to be added to the IEEE annual election ballot for positions of the officers to be elected by the voting members or groups of voting members for the coming term.

    Individual voting members who wish to circulate a petition shall submit a petition draft to IEEE Corporate Governance no earlier than 1 May of the year preceding the election and no later than 15 April of the year of the election. The petition draft must be accompanied by a statement from the proposed candidate that he or she is willing to serve if elected (see IEEE Policies, Section 13.7.3.B.)

    The number of signatures required on a petition shall depend on the number of eligible voters, as listed in the official IEEE membership records at the end of the year preceding the election.

    IEEE Corporate Governance staff shall advise those intending to seek nomination by petition of the relevant campaigning guidelines approved by the IEEE Board of Directors. All individuals who are circulating a petition or who are successful petitioners shall follow the campaigning guidelines. Petitioners are bound by the principles and relevant provisions of IEEE’s campaigning policies. However, they do not enjoy the privileges of candidates (such as equal opportunity to present in IEEE conferences/meetings and publications) until they become official candidates.

    Qualifications of petition candidates and procedures for announcement, distribution, and approval of petitions shall be specified in the IEEE Policies.

    What are the Qualifications and Qualities Needed?

    The minimum qualifications include being of senior member grade or higher, being a voting member of IEEE Region 1, and a willingness to commit to 6 years of service (2 years as Director-Elect, 2 years as Regional Director and voting member of the IEEE Board of Directors and a Delegate to the IEEE Assembly, and 2 years as Past Regional Director). Desirable qualities include having high level IEEE leadership experience and demonstrated abilities, significant high-level IEEE leadership experience – such as section chair, society president, chairing a board-level committee, and or major board service, and experience serving and involvement in the IEEE Region 1 Board of Governors.
