IEEE NY JOINT MTT AP PHO & NANO CHAPTER – SEMINAR: Nonlinear Photonics in the Mid-Infrared and Terahertz
IEEE NY JOINT MTT AP PHO & NANO CHAPTER – SEMINAR: Nonlinear Photonics in the Mid-Infrared and Terahertz
Abstract – Optical sensing at long wavelengths presents significant opportunities and significant challenges. The longwave infrared and terahertz ranges are renowned for their potential to sense molecules in a variety of contexts, such as high-speed chemical imaging, disease detection, and environmental monitoring; however, their promise has yet to be fulfilled due to a lack of compact broadband sources and low-loss integrated photonics platforms. The most important sensing challenges require extremely wideband sources to achieve specificity and selectivity, but to date, there are no technologies that are compact, bright, and broadband. I will discuss some of the work of my group that seeks to address this challenge. First, I will discuss our development of quantum cascade laser-based frequency combs, light sources that fill the gap between broadband incoherent sources and lasers. I will also discuss how our experimental investigations of these combs led to my discovery of a new fundamental comb state that manifests in almost any laser at any wavelength, acting as the phase equivalent of passive modelocking , . Next, I will discuss our recent development of ultra-low-loss platforms for long wavelengths based on hybrid photonic integration, which allowed us to create optical resonators in the longwave infrared with quality factors 100 times better than the state-of-the-art , . This approach is fully wavelength-scalable and allows for the first efficient nonlinear optics at long wavelengths, serving as a foundational element for future applications in quantum sensing. Finally, I will discuss our development of ptychoscopy, a new sensing modality that allows for ultra-precise measurements of optical spectra. This measurement enables the measurement of remote signals with quantum-limited frequency resolution over the entire bandwidth of a comb, for the first time allowing incoherent spectra to be characterized with the precision techniques of combs . IEEE DEI Schenectady Chapter, Machine-Learning Applications to Estimating Generator Useful Life
IEEE DEI Schenectady Chapter, Machine-Learning Applications to Estimating Generator Useful Life
Hydro-Québec is working on the development of a prognostic approach for hydrogenerators based on the combination of a physics-based model, which integrates all failure mechanisms in a graphical form, and data-based models adapted to the types of diagnostic tools. The failure mechanism graph, which has been defined by a group of experts, consists of several cause-and-effect chains formed by the grouping of sequential physical degradation states that ultimately lead to a failure state. Knowing the transition function between each pair of physical degradation states, it becomes possible to estimate the time required to reach the failure state for a given failure mechanism. The first essential step of this approach is to automatically identify the active failure mechanisms based on the analysis of observable symptoms extracted from diagnostic tools. For the stator winding of hydrogenerators, over 100 failure mechanisms have been consigned, most of which involve the presence of partial discharge (PD) activity. Analysis of each individual PD source is therefore essential to understanding the behavior and evolution of these failure mechanisms. This presentation will highlight the development carried out to automatically identify the active failure mechanisms for the stator winding, the diagnostic tools as well as the in-house integrated diagnostic application called DIAAA, and the methodology developed to recognize each active PD source using PDA and PRPD results. Knowles: Meeting High-Reliability Requirements of Medical Implantable Devices
Knowles: Meeting High-Reliability Requirements of Medical Implantable Devices
Given the life-critical functions performed by many medial implantable devices, and the invasive procedure required to implant medical equipment properly in the human body, it is imperative that all medical devices are designed to function reliably throughout their entire lifetime. But this can be challenging as medical implantable devices are made up of many individual parts, including a variety of electronic components such as multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). This means MLCC manufacturers today are not only tasked with responding to the demand for product miniaturization, they also need to be sure their MLCCs can meet the high-reliability expectations for these life-critical applications. In this white paper, we dive more into how to overcome the challenges associated with ensuring the reliability of electronic components designed for medical devices by covering the following topics: - Design considerations for using MLCCs in medical implantable devices - How to work with suppliers to properly test and screen MLCCs for high reliability - How Knowles Precision Devices designs, tests, and continues to innovate on our MLCCs to meet all the key requirements of the medical device industry, including high reliability Speaker(s): Greg Alton Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/429460

Improving Social Emotional Learning through AI-powered Tutoring
Improving Social Emotional Learning through AI-powered Tutoring
Emotion has a substantial influence on learning, attention, memory, and problem solving. This talk describes artificial intelligence tools that detect emotion, provide one-on-one assistance during online learning, and adjust their responses to each student's learning level. Problems are modulated and responses generated based on motivating students and advancing learning. Inferences about student knowledge are derived from predictive learning models based on students' faces, gestures, and emotions to make decisions about the next best intervention (e.g., provide video, reduce difficulty of math problem). These tutoring systems can: - Perform continuous assessment and they can sleuth the students' responses to address student performance and emotion in real-time. - Create computer-generated synthetic partners and personalized video content. For example, the tools will shortly be able to generate special computational characters. These generated characters may perhaps work more efficiently than do human tutors. - Create avatars to answer student queries, provide explanations, assist in problem solving and teach about social awareness and relationship skills. Cross-modal generative AI will provide ChatGPT-4 responses including hints, explanations, data-driven insights and recommendations. Understanding the role that emotions play in learning and teaching has supported the design and deployment of more effective online tools and learning experiences. This talk will identify the differential impact of AI tutors on student achievement, self-efficacy, and social emotional learning. IEEE NY JOINT MTT AP PHO & NANO CHAPTER – SEMINAR: Manipulating Light with Optical Metasurfaces: from Classical to Quantum
IEEE NY JOINT MTT AP PHO & NANO CHAPTER – SEMINAR: Manipulating Light with Optical Metasurfaces: from Classical to Quantum
Abstract – This talk focuses on the interaction of electromagnetic waves with metamaterials and manipulating the polarization state of light, which are essential for on-chip photonics and quantum information processing. By designing a metasurface based on geometrical-scaling-induced phase modulations, the transformation and distribution of different polarization-entangled photon pairs have been realized with multichannel dielectric metasurfaces. This is a significant development in applying metasurface to quantum networks. We also show a strategy to overcome the fundamental limit of polarization multiplexing capacity of metasurfaces by introducing the engineered noise to the precise solution of Jones matrix elements, where the conventional restriction of polarization multiplexing roots from the dimension constraint of the Jones matrix. This approach implies a new paradigm for high-capacity optical display, information encryption, and data storage. As a practical application, we also present a metasurface that achieves a matte appearance in reflection while offering broadband, perfect transmission, showcasing its potential for various optical technologies. Oscillation Dynamics and Control Strategies for Power Grids with High Penetration of Inverter-Based Resources
Oscillation Dynamics and Control Strategies for Power Grids with High Penetration of Inverter-Based Resources
This presentation explores the dynamics of wide-area oscillations in power grids and their impact on grid stability, particularly under high penetration of Inverter-Based Resources (IBR). This is part of ongoing three-year research project, Wide-Area Oscillation Assessment and Trending Analysis, funded by DOE Office of Electricity Advanced Grid Modeling program. Wide-area oscillations carry crucial information about system stability. While well-damped oscillations are often contained, strong oscillations can signal impending stability issues, reducing system performance, increasing equipment wear, and potentially causing generation tripping or grid breakup. Adequate damping of key oscillation modes is essential for reliable grid operation. Conventional analysis has focused on large synchronous generators, but the rising penetration of renewable generation and active loads is driving observable changes in oscillatory behavior. A systematic study reveals that high IBR penetration correlates with lower damping ratios of inter-area modes, while heavier loads correlate with lower oscillation frequencies. Without proper control and coordination, high IBR penetration could exacerbate these oscillations, posing risks to grid stability. To mitigate these risks, we developed and tested control strategies for IBRs to improve oscillation damping. Leveraging our prior experience in grid oscillation research, we focused on designing control algorithms for both grid-forming and grid-following IBRs. Study results show that these control strategies can enhance the stability of power grids with high renewable generation.
