Next-generation wireless RF systems are expected to contain multi-functional, highly flexible, and tightly integrated front-ends for achieving agile use of the frequency spectrum. In the past decade, this has led to research on filtering antennas, or filtennas, in which the functionality of the antenna and filter is combined into a single highly integrated module that achieves the function of both components with a higher-order transfer function. These filtennas can have improved performance, size, and cost. Furthermore, by incorporating frequency-agility, a filtenna can provide adaptation to changing radio environments. One of the challenges in realizing a reconfigurable filtenna is that two dissimilar elements need to be tuned in tandem. This presentation covers recent developments in the design of reconfigurable filtennas in the S-band (2-4 GHz) and X-band (8-12 GHz). The filtennas are based on using evanescent-mode cavities as the backing for slot antennas. A discussion of available tuning mechanisms and the challenges of going from S-band to X-band is included. Second-order reconfigurable filtenna proof-of-concept prototypes are shown in both frequency bands. The prototype filtennas are created using commercially available printed circuit board materials and tuning elements and measured in an anechoic chamber. The S-band filtenna can continuously tune from 2 to 2.6 GHz while achieving a realized gain between 2.7 to 5.2 dB, respectively. The X-band filtenna demonstrates tuning from 9.6 to 11.1 GHz, with a maximum gain of 5 dB. Advancements in technology scaling have ushered in larger systems boasting enhanced functionality, increased operational speed, and expanded data bandwidth. However, these benefits come with more demanding clocking requirements, including extended distribution distances and heightened timing precision. Furthermore, technology scaling has rendered traditional analog design challenging. Wider PVT variations necessitate intensive calibration efforts, and increased integration levels call for resilience against external noise sources. Moreover, the fact that reference frequency and loop bandwidth do not scale at the same rate as technology leads to prohibitive costs for oversized loop filters. While pure analog implementations offer intuitive operation and elegant analysis, clocking circuits incorporating digital elements offer effective solutions to these challenges. This presentation will cover how digital circuits can enhance clock generation and distribution through techniques like calibration and signal processing. Beginning with well-established methods that harness the mixed-signal nature of PLLs, such as delta-sigma modulation for the MDD in fractional-N PLLs, the presentation will shift toward digital-intensive architectures. It will focus on techniques that leverage digital implementations for error detection and enhance timing accuracy through either analog or digital correction. State-of-the-art designs featuring runtime calibration and power noise cancellation for clock generation and distribution will also be introduced. Abstract: Since most electrical engineers and PCB designers did not learn about low frequency signal integrity and grounding in school, it can be challenging for them to achieve good low frequency signal integrity that is vital to the performance of closed-loop systems. Precision measurements and A/D conversion of temperature, flow, pressure, current, and voltage in modern energy conversion and motion control systems are simply not possible without excellent low frequency signal integrity. In this talk, we focus on the recent signal processing strategies and challenges associated with the development of sensing and communication systems that coexist with the vehicles and road infrastructure deployed in a given area. We consider a broad definition of coexistence, which covers joint communication and sensing, collaborative communication and sensing, and also interference. We consider an aspect of the coexistence paradigm where the two systems support each other beyond interference mitigation such as sensor-aided communications and communications-aided sensing. This opens up the avenue for the development of multivehicle sensor fusion strategies. We describe recent works that define topologies for combining radar and communication functionalities into the same equipment, drawing on the spectrum scarcity and possible gains from the reuse of resources. In particular, we focus on the joint design of a waveform to mitigate interference, including communications-centric waveforms (OFDMA and 802.11ad), radar-centric waveforms (PMCW), or unified waveforms achieving optimal trade-offs between the two systems. The IRS’ definition of R&D and industry’s definition of R&D differ. A large majority of R&D performed in the US is done in the private sector, rather than done by universities and the work that qualifies for R&D Tax Credits is much broader (and more lucrative) than you would think. The program that pays for this R&D work is the Research Tax Credit, which is administered by the IRS. This presentation, R&D Tax Credits for Engineers and Scientists, is a high level basic primer that will teach you what type of R&D work that you already do qualifies for the credit and the general steps required to present your work successfully to the IRS. We will begin with a brief overview of radiation effects in electronics, and their effect on reliability. Then we will cover the history of the discovery and our growing awareness of them, with special attention paid to the place of the Harvard Cyclotron Laboratory (HCL)/Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Rad Test program in that history. We will then look at what factors made HCL so prominent in the early work of understanding these effects, and why the re-purposing of equipment built at HCL for the MGH program was particularly useful in electronics reliability testing. Finally, we will finish with a few words on the future of the MGH test program.
