IEEE Springfield Section: The Future Grid Reliability Study
The Future Grid Reliability Study (FGRS) was performed by ISO New England at the request of the New England Power Pool (NEPOOL) as the 2021 Economic Study. The ISO’s Economic Studies evaluate various potential futures for electric generation resource mixes, changes to demand for electric power, transmission topology changes, and other possible assumptions against various economic and engineering metrics to inform and guide the states government, industry stakeholders, the public, and future ISO work. The FGRS was a seminal Economic Study that was developed by NEPOOL for over a year before its submission to the ISO – evaluating three different visions of the 2040 New England power grid and numerous alternatives through up to five types of analyses. In FGRS, visions of the future power grid has departed significantly enough from current operations that it strains current modeling tools. This presentation will cover the origin of FGRS, the goal of the study, how the ISO performed the study, key takeaways, lessons learned, and future work that builds off of FGRS. Face Video Compression with Generative Models
Video coding is a fundamental and ubiquitous technology in the modern society. Generations of international video coding standards, such as the widely-deployed H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC and the latest H.266/VVC, provide essential means for enabling video conferencing, video streaming, video sharing, e-commerce, entertainment, and many more video applications. These existing standards all rely on the fundamental theory of signal processing and information theory to encode generic video efficiently with a favorable rate distortion behavior. In recent years, rapid advancement in deep learning and artificial intelligence technology has allowed people to manipulate images and videos using deep generative models. Among these, of particular interest to the field of video coding is the application of deep generative models towards compressing talking-face video at ultra-low bit rates. By focusing on talking faces, generative models can effectively learn the inherent structure about composition, movement and posture of human faces and deliver promising results using very little bandwidth resource. At ultra-low bit rates, when even the latest video coding standard H.266/VVC is apt to suffer from significant blocking artifacts and blurriness beyond the point of recognition, generative methods can maintain clear facial features and vivid expression in the reconstructed video. Further, generative face video coding techniques are inherently capable of manipulating the reconstructed face and promise to deliver a more interactive experience. In this talk, we start with a quick overview of traditional and deep learning-based video coding techniques. We then focus on face video coding with generative networks, and present two schemes that send different deep information in the bitstream, one sending compact temporal motion features and the other sending 3D facial semantics. We compare their compression efficiency and visual quality with that of the latest H.266/VVC standard, and showcase the power of deep generative models in preserving vivid facial images with little bandwidth resource. We also present visualization results to exhibit the capability of the 3D facial semantics-based scheme in terms of interacting with the reconstructed face video and animating virtual faces. The IEEE North Jersey Section Communications Society (ComSoc chapter) is offering a course entitled "INTRODUCTION TO MACHINE LEARNING". As more and more organizations make a push for data-driven decisions, it is important to know how to extract value from the information available. This course will provide practical experience with these techniques so students can be productive with computational approach to using modern tools for analyzing data. This course is an introduction to statistical techniques for machine learning and data mining, assuming basic background knowledge of python programming and basic math. It emphasizes mathematical methods and computer applications related to automated learning for prediction, classification, knowledge discovery, and forecasting in modern data science. Special emphasis will be given to the collection, mining, and analysis of large data sets. Statistical software (Python, Scikit-learn) will be used throughout the course for the exploration of different learning algorithms and for the creation of appropriate graphics for analysis. Applications include recommendation systems, predictive customer models, text mining, and sentiment analysis. You are invited to attend the Roger Williams University Computer Science Senior Design Team presentations of their year-long capstone project status on May 9th 2023 at 2:00 PM Eastern. The spring semester focused on implementation. Presentations will begin at 2:10 and each is about 20-25 minutes in length. The order of presentations is listed below and a Zoom link is provided for remote access. Times are approximate 2:10 Academic Advising: Course planning can be difficult especially if a student is not following a typical template. This program assists the student and advisor in selecting courses for the upcoming semester using a drag and drop visual approach. The system also allows a student and advisor to look beyond the current semester and layout a full 8-semester plan and then adjust that plan form semester to semester to account for changes. 2:40 Onsite Scan (Google Glass): Onsite Scan is an application that changes the way information is accessed on the construction work site. Onsite Scan utilizes Google Glass Enterprise 2 technology to scan QR codes that display web pages, and this combined with an intuitive control scheme allows users to access information without needing a device in their hands. 3:10 Hololens: The HoloLens 2 is an innovative, reliable and easy to use wearable device that allows users in a construction setting to scan MSDS labels. Using augmented reality and machine learning, the NFPA diamonds can be scanned to pull up related safety information about that specific material as it pertains to the specific construction site. 3:40 Utility App: Utility app is an application that is used to create markers that use the google map API to identify the locations of pipes and other underground utilities. More than 38% of global energy is consumed by industry, and within industry almost 70% of electricity is consumed by electric motors. Given the huge energy cost associated with running these motors, even a 1% increase in operational efficiency will result in huge cost savings. Equipment maintenance is key to optimal motor performance. In general, equipment maintenance can be divided into two broad categories. In the first, equipment is taken out of service on a regular schedule (Preventative Maintenance- PM) and in the second, maintenance occurs when the equipment fails (Corrective Maintenance or "run-to failure"). One occurs too early, the other too late; both are wasteful in terms of time and resources. A third option is Condition-Based Maintenance/Condition-Based Monitoring (CbM). This places sensors where they can detect subsystem trends or excursions from baseline performance to alert process owners about specific problems- before failures occur- allowing replacement parts to be on hand at a conveniently planned repair time. The process owner is no longer replacing good parts on a scheduled maintenance plan, nor is he or she in crisis hair-on-fire mode because the equipment failed unexpectedly. GAMBIT Satellite - Panel Discussion Imagine building a camera with early 1960s technology to take photographs from 130 miles above the Earth, moving over 18,000 miles per hour, and clear enough to see trucks stored in a base. That’s just what the Research & Engineering division (originally part of Kodak and now owned by L3Harris Technologies) did while developing the camera optics for a highly classified reconnaissance satellite project called Gambit-1. Gambit was one of a series of top-secret satellites whose mission was to photograph Soviet military and industrial capabilities from orbit. Between 1963 and 1967, Gambit-1 flew 38 missions and consistently returned high resolution photographs to Earth. This allowed US National Security a view of the Soviet Union and other areas of potential hostile activity that were previously inaccessible without international incident. The Research & Engineering division developed the satellite’s 77-inch focal length camera, which provided resolution of about 2-3ft, as well as the film transport system. Once exposed, the special film was ejected from the satellite in the film return capsule, which then fell through the atmosphere to be recovered mid-air by specially equipped USAF planes and flown to Rochester for processing. The Gambit optical system designed and developed by these Rochester men and women was partially declassified in 2011 and is now on long-term loan to the RMSC by the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). Visitors can see the new display in the Strasenburgh Planetarium lobby. Silicon-based Terahertz systems is a field that is only about a decade old. In this time, we have seen a phenomenal growth of silicon systems operating at THz frequencies for a wide range of applications in sensing, imaging and communication. It can be argued that both the ‘THz gap’ and the ‘technology and applications gap’ is closing in meaningful ways in the THz range. Technologies beyond 100 GHz focusing on sensing, imaging and wireless back-haul links are getting attractive as we enter into a new area of highly dense network of autonomous systems requiring ultra-high speed and reliable links. In order to move beyond this inflection point as Moore’s law continue to slow, I will discuss why we need to look beyond the classical ‘device’-level metrics of efficiency and sensitivity of THz sources and detectors towards holistic ‘system’ level properties such as scalability and programmability. Such properties are critically important for applications in sensing and imaging, as evidenced across sensor fusion technologies across mmWave, IR and optical frequencies. In this talk, I will highlight approaches that cut across electromagnetics, circuits, systems and signal processing to enable THz beamforming arrays, CMOS sensors reconfigurable across the three field properties of spectrum (100 GHz-1000 GHz), beam pattern and polarization (Nature Comm’19), programmable THz metasurfaces with CMOS tiling (Nature Elec’20), and enabling dynamic spectrum shaping (ISSCC’21, JSSC’21) and physically secure sub-THz links (ISSCC’20, Nature Elec’21). In the end, I will comment on what could be the major directions for the field in the coming decade. Road transportation, which accounts for 22 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, is undergoing a major transformation with the advent of ridesharing, autonomous driving, and vehicle electrification. Collectively these technologies, in conjunction with renewable sources of electricity, have the potential to dramatically reduce the negative impact of road transportation on the health of the planet. The successful convergence of these technologies will require electric vehicles that are low cost and fully autonomous. These attributes can be realized through dynamic wireless charging. However, this will require wireless charging technology that is well beyond current capabilities and opens new areas of research related to power and transportation infrastructure. Using examples from research on capacitive wireless charging (as opposed to the more common inductive techniques), which leverage very high frequency power electronics, this talk will highlight the opportunities and challenges in dynamic wireless charging of electric vehicles. CubeSat Antennas— from Link Budget Analysis to Orbits CubeSats are modular and standardized modern small satellites. They have been gaining steady popularity as educational projects, low-cost space exploration vehicles for technology demonstrations, multi-point observations of space environment, and monitoring/reporting proper deployment of expensive deep space instruments. Antennas are critical components for CubeSat missions and provide some or all of the following functions: telemetry, tracking, command (TT\&C), high speed downlink for payload data, receiving positioning data, and inter-satellite cross links. To provide reliable and effective antenna solutions, it is important to understand basics of CubeSat development cycle and link budget analysis. The objective of this presentation is to offer a tour of several recent CubeSat missions and antenna designs for spacecraft, ground station, and radio beacon. The designs are guided by the link budget analysis, material selection, and form factors specific to each application. Bio Dr. Reyhan Baktur is an associate professor at the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), Utah State University (USU). Her research interests include antennas and microwave engineering with a focus on antenna design for CubeSats; optically transparent antennas; multifunctional integrated antennas, sensors, and microwave circuits. She is affiliated with the Center for Space Engineering at USU, the Space Dynamics Laboratory (the university affiliated research center), and collaborates with NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. With the rise of cloud-based and managed services, public safety agencies responsible for emergency operations have struggled to advance technologically without sacrificing reliability and redundancy. DEN (Distributable Emergency Network) is a solution that allows public safety agencies and other approved organizations to operate a fully managed IT infrastructure in austere environments with or without an Internet connection. Techniques for High-Performance Successive-Approximation-Register ADCs
The demand for high-speed, low-power analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) for high-speed wireline transceivers and mmWave radios continues to grow unabated, driven in part by advances in DSP-based architectures and technology-scaling benefits in digital circuits. Recent works on high-speed ADCs operating at > 10 GHz with 6 to 8 bits of resolution have made tremendous progress, but significant challenges remain. This talk discusses techniques to achieve simultaneous high speed and high power efficiency by using the time-interleaved successive-approximation-register (SAR) architecture. We present “constant-matching scaling” and “grouped capacitors” for the digital-to-analog-converter (DAC) to aggressively reduce the capacitance and increase the speed. The ADC also demonstrates a “dual-path” bootstrapped switch to increase the sampling spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR). Employing the above and other low-power, high-speed techniques, the proposed SAR ADC obtains a single-channel speed of 1.25-GHz without the need for pipelining. The ADC uses only 8X time-interleaving to achieve an overall sampling rate of 10 GHz and a signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio (SNDR) of 36.9 dB at Nyquist while consuming 21 mW.
