The Power Chapter WEBINAR: Benchmarking Demand Flexibility for Grid-interactive Efficient Buildings
The Power Chapter WEBINAR: Benchmarking Demand Flexibility for Grid-interactive Efficient Buildings
Building demand flexibility (DF) research has recently gained attention. To unlock building DF as a predictable grid resource, we must establish a quantitative understanding of the resource size, performance variability, and predictability based on large empirical datasets. The electrical grid’s geographically diverse and changing nature presents challenges to comparing building DF performance measured under different conditions (i.e., benchmarking DF). To address this challenge, a novel DF benchmarking framework focused on load shedding and shifting is presented; the foundation is a set of simple, proven single-event metrics with attributes describing event conditions. These enable benchmarking and identifying trends that represent how these attributes influence DF. To test its feasibility and scalability, the DF framework was applied to two case studies of 11 office buildings and 121 big-box retail buildings with demand response participation data. These examples provided a pathway for using both building level benchmarking and aggregation to extract insights into building DF about magnitude, consistency, and influential factors. This webinar can draw more attention from energy audience to focus on the grid-interactive efficiency buildings and participate in the SBCS subcommittee and associated task forces. The presented work also provides cutting-edge research outcome for the community. Building demand flexibility (DF) research has recently gained attention. Time: Thursday, February 02, 2023 at 12 PM, EDT Reserve your seat by clicking on the below Register Now Tab. "The event link will be shared on 1st February, 2023". Abstract: Modeling and simulation is essential for a myriad of power engineering functions, from planning power grid expansions, to real-time market operations. However, existing modeling and simulation technologies lack portability requiring reimplementation and creating ambiguity, while locking-in data and analysts to specific tools. The open access Modelica language offers a new paradigm, the ability to build object-oriented equation-based models, supported by multiple tools and advanced modeling constructs. This has the potential of drastically reducing modeling costs, especially those required to meet the rapid changes that power grids are undergoing to introduce more renewable energy sources. The seminar will introduce the Modelica language and the OpenIPSL.org library for power system dynamic modeling and simulation and the strategies adopted for modeling quality and to foster adoption which include: open source development, software-to-software verification using de facto industry tools, model maintenance and model transformation tools from proprietary model descriptions and data exchange standards, all enabled thanks to the Modelica language. In addition, the talk will describe some on-going research where the power of open-access standards enable us to quickly prototype solutions for evolving use-cases where modeling and simulation is needed thanks to the efforts in developing the OpenIPSL. Smart IoT for energy sustainable environments
Smart IoT for energy sustainable environments
Smart environments in wide-ranging applications are expected to have a large number of static/mobile IoT devices operating via machine-type communications for sensing/monitoring, actuation, and control purposes. For scalability and widespread adoption of such autonomous environments the IoT devices and the network need to be low-cost, light in terms of energy and data footprints, and potentially self-adaptive, so as to minimize human intervention. In this context, in this talk, we will present a data-driven approach to the performance optimization of IoT network systems. By application of context-aware learning of temporal and spatial dynamic stochasticity and cross-correlation of the sensing parameters of interest, the multi-sensing and communication activities of the IoT nodes are optimized. Further, data communication priority is dynamically adapted, thereby further minimizing sensing and communication-related energy and communication bandwidth overheads. A few examples, include smart power grid monitoring and smart sensing IoT systems, we will demonstrate how data-driven, context-aware light-weight machine learning and edge computing-aided approaches can be utilized for more accurate system performance characterization and optimizations, leading to significant processing, communication, and storage resource efficiency and energy sustainability of the IoT network. We will share our experiences from field experiments, proof-of-concept implementations, and campus-wide deployments, and will highlight the possibilities of learning-aided networking optimizations for various multidisciplinary-disciplinary applications. Developing optical elastography techniques for intraoperative breast cancer detection
Developing optical elastography techniques for intraoperative breast cancer detection
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) removes tumor with margins of healthy tissue from patient’s body and is one of the main treatments for patients with early-stage breast cancer. However, ~20-30% of patients undertaking BCS require a second surgery, due to the lack of effective intraoperative cancer detection methods and residual cancer detected close to the margins of the excised mass after the initial surgery. Optical elastography, an emerging technique which maps the tissue mechanical properties into 2-D or 3-D images, holds promise to assess tumor margins accurately and rapidly during surgery, enabling surgeons to ensure complete excision of tumor. We developed optical elastography techniques based on optical coherence tomography and recently demonstrated an accuracy of 95% for tumor margin assessment on excised breast tissue using a benchtop system. In addition, we demonstrated the first in vivo intraoperative breast cancer detection using a handheld optical elastography probe. Moreover, to optimize the likely uptake of optical elastography by surgeons, we developed a variant of optical elastography, termed camera-based optical palpation, using simple, cost-effective digital cameras to assist surgeon remove the residual cancer. As camera-based optical palpation is cost-effective and portable, it holds promise to be widely used not only in metropolitan hospitals but also in hospitals in rural and remote areas, improving equity of access to optimal treatment for patients. Digital Signal Processing (DSP) for Software Radio
Digital Signal Processing (DSP) for Software Radio
(https://ieeeboston.org/event/dspswradio/?instance_id=3236) First Video Release and Orientation, Thursday, January 19, 2023, 4:00PM - 4:30PM Additional videos released weekly in advance of that week’s live session! Live Workshops: 4:00PM – 5:30PM EST; Thursdays, January 26, February 2, 9, 16 and 23. Attendees will have access to the recorded session and exercises for two months (until April 23) after the live session ends! New Format Combining Live Workshops with Pre-recorded Video This is a hands-on course providing pre-recorded lectures that students can watch on their own schedule and an unlimited number of times prior to live Q&A/Workshop sessions with the instructor. Ten 1.5 hour videos released 2 per week while the course is in session will be available for up to two months after the conclusion of the course. Course Summary This course builds on the IEEE course “DSP for Wireless Communications” also taught by Dan Boschen, further detailing digital signal processing most applicable to practical real-world problems and applications in radio communication systems. Students need not have taken the prior course if they are familiar with fundamental DSP concepts such as the Laplace and Z transform and basic digital filter design principles. This course brings together core DSP concepts to address signal processing challenges encountered in radios and modems for modern wireless communications. Specific areas covered include carrier and timing recovery, equalization, automatic gain control, and considerations to mitigate the effects of RF and channel distortions such as multipath, phase noise and amplitude/phase offsets. Dan builds an intuitive understanding of the underlying mathematics through the use of graphics, visual demonstrations, and real-world applications for mixed signal (analog/digital) modern transceivers. This course is applicable to DSP algorithm development with a focus on meeting practical hardware development challenges, rather than a tutorial on implementations with DSP processors. Now with Jupyter Notebooks! Speaker(s): Dan Boschen , Agenda: Topics / Schedule: Class 1: DSP Review, Radio Architectures, Digital Mapping, Pulse Shaping, Eye Diagrams Class 2: ADC Receiver, CORDIC Rotator, Digital Down Converters, Numerically Controlled Oscillators Class 3: Digital Control Loops; Output Power Control, Automatic Gain Control Class 4: Digital Control Loops; Carrier and Timing Recovery, Sigma Delta Converters Class 5: RF Signal Impairments, Equalization and Compensation, Linear Feedback Shift Registers Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/320598
