IEEE PCJS Young Professional Talk Series 2024 The Concepts, Algorithms, and Applications of Artificial Intelligence Liang Zhang Assistant Professor, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, USA About the Talk The concept of Artificial Intelligence (AI) was first introduced by John McCarthy and Claude Shannon at Dartmouth College in 1955. AI empowers computers with the ability to perceive, reason, and learn, enabling them to mimic and simulate human cognitive processes. Machine learning, a core aspect of AI, allows systems to recognize patterns, make informed decisions, and improve performance over time through experience and data. In this talk, we will explore the fundamental concepts of AI, various search algorithms, decision-making in complex environments, advancements in the field, and the future of AI. Despite its relatively short history, AI has achieved remarkable progress and continues to drive transformative changes across the globe. About the Speaker Liang Zhang (Member, IEEE) received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Newark, NJ, USA, in 2020. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering and Aviation Sciences at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), Princess Anne, MD, USA. Prior to joining UMES, Dr. Zhang was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at George Mason University, Fairfax, VA, USA. Dr. Zhang has received several prestigious honors, including the Outstanding Dissertation Award from NJIT in 2023, the Hashimoto Prize for the best doctoral dissertation at NJIT in 2020, the IEEE GLOBECOM Travel Grant Award in 2016, and the Best Paper Award at IEEE ICNC in 2014. He has authored 33 publications in leading journals and conferences and has served as a reviewer for numerous IEEE Transactions journals. Dr. Zhang’s research interests span machine learning and the Internet of Things (IoT), mobile edge computing and airborne networks, wireless communications and UAV communications, wireless virtual reality, caching, and energy optimization.
