IEEE PCJS Distinguished Lecture by Sudipto Chakraborty
IEEE PCJS Distinguished Lecture by Sudipto Chakraborty
This talk will cover practical challenges for cryogenic CMOS designs for next generation quantum computing. Starting from system level, it will detail the design considerations for a non-multiplexed, semi-autonomous, transmon qubit state controller (QSC) implemented in 14nm CMOS FinFET technology. The QSC includes an augmented general-purpose digital processor that supports waveform generation and phase rotation operations combined with a low power current-mode single sideband upconversion I/Q mixer-based RF arbitrary waveform generator (AWG). Implemented in 14nm CMOS FinFET technology, the QSC generates control signals in its target 4.5GHz to 5.5 GHz frequency range, achieving an SFDR > 50dB for a signal bandwidth of 500MHz. With the controller operating in the 4K stage of a cryostat and connected to a transmon qubit in the cryostat’s millikelvin stage, measured transmon T1 and T2 coherence times were 75.5μS and 73 μS, respectively, in each case comparable to results achieved using conventional room temperature controls. In further tests with transmons, a qubit-limited error rate of 7.76x10-4 per Clifford gate is achieved, again comparable to results achieved using room temperature controls. The QSC’s maximum RF output power is -18 dBm, and power dissipation per qubit under active control is 23mW Speaker(s): Sudipto Chakraborty, Agenda: Refreshments Distinguished Lecture Room: B205, Bldg: Engineering Quad, Olden Street, Princeton, New Jersey, United States, 08544

IEEE Circuit and System (CAS) Seasonal School on In-Memory Computing (IMC 2024) – First Phase
IEEE Circuit and System (CAS) Seasonal School on In-Memory Computing (IMC 2024) – First Phase
The main goal of this seasonal school is to dive deep into the rapidly developing field of in-memory computing with a focus on Artificial intelligence (AI) and cover its cross-layer design challenges from device to algorithms. The IEEE Seasonal School in Circuits and Systems on In-Memory Computing (IMC 2024) offers talks and tutorials by leading researchers from multiple disciplines and prominent universities and promotes student short presentations to demonstrate new research and results, discuss the potential and challenges of the in-memory accelerators, future research needs, and directions, and shape collaborations. First Talk Title: Developing True Intelligent System: Tools and Case Studies In recent years, we have seen tremendous growth in the AI/ML domain. However, we are still far away from building truly intelligent automated systems. To achieve a true intelligent agent, one should better human decisions and should learn continuously with minimal human intervention. In this talk, we talk about Reinforcement Learning (RL), one key tool to achieving this intelligence. We will discuss the recipe for leveraging RL to create true intelligent systems. As a proof of concept, we discuss two research directions on leveraging RL tools to create intelligent automated agents. Finally, we touch upon some open questions that need to be addressed to realize the dream of true intelligent systems. Second Talk Title: General-Purpose Processing in Memristive Memory Arrays In the last decade, computing systems have faced several challenges that have slowed down their performance improvement substantially. Moreover, we are facing serious challenges and concerns regarding the energy consumption of computing systems. To contain this increasing gap between performance demand and supply alternative paradigms and technologies have been heavily researched. One of the outstanding alternatives is Memory-Centric Computing (MCC). The main idea of MCC is to process data as close as possible to the memory. This reduces the delay and energy overhead associated with loading data for processing and sending it back to the memory for storing the results. MCC can be performed using any memory technology. Among various memory technologies, memristors stand out as one of the best candidates. They are non-volatile, fast, extremely compact, and compatible with the widely used Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) technology. These properties give them an edge in terms of energy efficiency, speed-up gains, price, and their potential share in the future market, respectively. In this talk, we focus on computation inside the memory array and using stateful logics. Processing data inside the array leads to the minimum data travel distance possible, which maximized the associated benefits. We present an overview of some the computational units that we have proposed, such as adders, multipliers, sorting systems, and filters, some of which are combine MCC with other emerging computing paradigms such as stochastic and approximate computing. A Characterization of All Passivizing Input-Output Transformations of a Passive-Short System
A Characterization of All Passivizing Input-Output Transformations of a Passive-Short System
Passivity theory is one of the cornerstones of control theory providing a systematic way to study the stability of interconnected systems. In practice, many systems are not passive, and must be passivized in order to be included in the framework of passivity theory. Input-output (loop) transformations are the most general tool for passivizing systems. In this paper, we propose a characterization of all possible input-output transformations that map a system with given shortage of passivity to a system with prescribed excess of passivity. We do so by using the connection between passivity theory and cones for SISO systems, and using the S-lemma for MIMO systems. We also present several possible applications of our results, including simultaneous passivation of multiple systems or with respect to multiple equilibria, as well as optimization problems such as $\mathcal{L}_2$-gain minimization. November Edition: Why did you become an engineer/scientist/technologist?
November Edition: Why did you become an engineer/scientist/technologist?
Our speaker for this month is Mr. Jeffrey Mayer, whose initial degree was in Zoology followed by a 10-year career in the Navy, separating as a Lieutenant Commander. He returned to college earning a BS EE and later a Master's in Technical Management. After a brief stint in private industry, Mr. Mayer returned to the federal government to serve as the lead systems engineer and program manager for several small but challenging training and weapon system programs. He will discuss what it takes to be successful when dealing with others (management and engineers) and how to groom yourself for advancement…the plusses and minuses. One area, as an engineering manager, he found that young people entering the workforce have certain expectations and shortcomings. He always felt (since he was 22) that it was his job to make them successful. Agenda: 4:15 PM registration and refreshments 4:30 PM Presentation by Jeffrey Mayer followed by questions and answers. The presentation will be livestreamed. Room: Classroom, The Baldwin, 50 Woodmont Avenue, Londonderry, New Hampshire, United States, 03053, Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/439189

Learn to Solve Constrained Markov Decision Process Efficiently
Learn to Solve Constrained Markov Decision Process Efficiently
Abstract: Many constrained sequential decision-making processes, such as safe AV navigation, wireless network control, caching, cloud computing, etc., can be cast as Constrained Markov Decision Processes (CMDP). Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithms have been used to learn optimal policies for unknown unconstrained MDP. Extending these RL algorithms to unknown CMDP brings the additional challenge of maximizing the reward and satisfying the constraints. In this talk, I will present algorithms that can learn safe policies effectively. In the second part of the talk, I will demonstrate how the theoretical understanding of the constrained MDP can help us to develop algorithms for practical applications. As an application, I show how to learn to obtain optimal beam directions under time-varying interference-constrained channels for a mobile service robot. Optimal beam selection in mmWave is challenging because of its time-varying nature. We propose a primal-dual Gaussian process bandit with adaptive reinitialization to handle non-stationarity and interference constraints. We demonstrate how our approach learns to adapt effectively to time-varying channel conditions. Co-sponsored by: IEEE North Jersey Section Speaker(s): Dr. Arnob Ghosh, Agenda: Nov 6th, Talk: 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM Discussion Q/A: 8:00 PM - 8:15 PM Room: ECE 202, Bldg: Electrical and Computer Engineering, 154 Summit Street, Newark, New Jersey, United States, 07102
Circumventing Bounds and Realizing Novel Performance Characteristics using Time-Varying Antenna Systems
Circumventing Bounds and Realizing Novel Performance Characteristics using Time-Varying Antenna Systems
Fundamental physical limits apply to many key antenna performance parameters (gain, Q-factor, efficiency), particularly when device dimensions are small relative to operating wavelengths – the “electrically small” regime. These limitations cannot be exceeded by linear time-invariant (LTI) devices, and can manifest as critical bottlenecks for communications and sensing technology. In this talk, we survey recent work on moving antenna technology away from the classical LTI design paradigm and toward active, non-linear, and time-varying systems. Emphasis is placed on research incorporating time-varying elements into antennas and matching networks with the goal of exceeding physical bounds on LTI antenna metrics. This includes direct antenna modulation (DAM), which treats time-varying antennas and matching networks as active parts of the modulation process, allowing for efficient, extreme instantaneous radiated signal bandwidths from electrically small apertures. Additionally, the co-design of electrically small antennas with parametric pumping networks for broadband, low-noise receive applications will be presented. Modeling challenges and simulation approaches for time-varying radiators will be discussed and several theoretical concepts in the area of time-varying antennas will also be surveyed, including the extension of effective aperture to time-varying antennas and the effect of cross-frequency coupling on the effective receiver noise temperature. IEEE Foundation Estate Planning Luncheon at the beautiful Bell Works venue in Holmdel, NJ
IEEE Foundation Estate Planning Luncheon at the beautiful Bell Works venue in Holmdel, NJ
Join the IEEE Foundation on Friday, 8 November, at 11:30 a.m. EST for an IEEE Foundation Estate Planning Luncheon at the beautiful Bell Works venue in Holmdel, NJ. This event is an opportunity for IEEE Members and friends to gather and connect with peers before the holidays and to see how investing in the future could keep many of the IEEE activities and programs thriving for generations to come. Estate planning encompasses various components, and knowing which ones apply to you and the correct order in which to address them is essential. Often, people focus on reducing inheritance taxes at the expense of maximizing retirement cash flow and lowering effective tax rates. It is crucial to understand how properly structuring assets and cash flows can lead to increased retirement cash flow and reduced tax rates during your lifetime. Our keynote speaker is Shaun Scutellaro, CPA and Partner at Cohn Reznick, LLP. Shaun has extensive career experience in public and private accounting and domestic and foreign tax. He is a member of the AICPA and NJCPA and is beginning a term on the board of Trustees for NJCPA compliance for individuals. Shaun will guide us through his expertise in a brief and insightful seminar on estate planning. PC Board Design and Layout for Low-EMI Power Conversion
PC Board Design and Layout for Low-EMI Power Conversion
Talk Title: PC Board Design and Layout for Low-EMI Power Conversion Presentation Outline: As a consultant for over 10 years, Kenneth has realized the root cause of many design issues revolves around the circuit board design and how the I/O and power connectors are arranged and filtered. Poor board designs and poor interconnect placement and filtering can result in radiated emissions, radiated immunity, and electrostatic discharge (ESD) compliance failures, among others. Bad designs often result in endless cycles of trial and error mitigation, compliance testing and board spins. This drags out the schedule and is very costly. In the presentation, Kenneth will explain how digital signals propagate in boards as electromagnetic fields. He will also explain how interconnect placement and poor filtering design and layout can affect the EMI performance. Once you understand this, then board stack-up, trace routing, filter design and interconnect placement should become very clear and you should be able to design a low-EMI board the first time! About the speaker: Kenneth Wyatt is principal consultant of Wyatt Technical Services LLC and served three years as the senior technical editor for Interference Technology magazine from 2016 through 2018. He has worked in the field of EMC engineering for over 30 years with a specialty in EMI troubleshooting and pre-compliance testing. He is a co-author of the popular EMC Pocket Guide and RFI Radio Frequency Interference Pocket Guide. He also co-authored the book with Patrick André, EMI Troubleshooting Cookbook for Product Designers, with forward by Henry Ott. He recently completed and released a three-volume “EMC Troubleshooting Trilogy”, which is now available through Amazon. See web for ordering info. He is widely published and authors a monthly column for the Signal Integrity Journal, has blogged for EDN.com for many years, has a monthly column, EMC Bench Notes, for InCompliance Magazine (starting 2024), writes regularly for EEWorld and continues to write for Interference Technology Magazine. Ken is a senior life member of the IEEE and a longtime member of the EMC Society. Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/443500

Distinguished Lecture (Virtual) – Civilized Collaboration: Ethical architectures for enforcing legal requirements and mediating social norms in Human-robot Interaction
Distinguished Lecture (Virtual) - Civilized Collaboration: Ethical architectures for enforcing legal requirements and mediating social norms in Human-robot Interaction Prof. Ronald C. Arkin, Georgia Tech, IEEE Fellow Abstract: The ways in which we treat each other, typically underpinned by an ethical theory, serve as a foundation for civilized activity. Bounds and requirements are established for normal and acceptable interactions between humans. If we are to create robotic systems to reside among us, they must also adhere to a set of related values that humans operate under. This talk first describes the importance of such conventions in human-robot interaction, then outlines a way forward including the difficult research questions remaining to be confronted in ethical human robot interaction (HRI). In particular, examples involving architectures using ethical governors, moral emotions, responsibility advisors and theories of mind are described in two quite different contexts: warfare and the maintenance of human dignity in healthcare. Even the role of deception must be considered as an important adjunct to HRI, as it may yield more effective intentional and autonomous social robots if properly deployed. Finally, we can consider how robots may eventually be able to engineer more socially just human beings via nudging and the ethical questions associated with using such devices. Prof. Ronald C. Arkin is Professor Emeritus with the College of Computing at Georgia TechProf. Arkin was named a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology in 2012 and a Distinguished Visitor for the IEEE Computer Society in 2023. He was elected a Fellow of the IEEE in 2003. EDS Distinguished Lecturer Talk: Reliability of Metal Gate / High-K CMOS devices
EDS Distinguished Lecturer Talk: Reliability of Metal Gate / High-K CMOS devices
Reliability of Metal Gate / High-K CMOS devices 4PM Monday, Nov 11, 2024 Golisano Hall - GOL 1710/20/30 (Cybersecurity Wing) Andreas Kerber, PhD IEEE Senior Member and Distinguished Lecturer e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Aggressively scaled transistor technologies with metal gate/high-k stacks encounter additional reliability challenges beside bias temperature instability (BTI) in PMOS and NMOS devices, time dependent dielectric breakdown and hot carrier degradation. Time-zero variability and variability induced by device aging is a growing concern which needs to be modeled using stochastic processes. The physical nature of the stochastic process remains under debate and to support model development efforts large statistical data sets are essential. In addition, self-heating during reliability testing can be observed in novel device structures like bulk FinFET, SOI FinFETs, FDSOI and gate-all-around devices and needs proper attention. Furthermore, to increase the confidence in the discrete device reliability models, device-to-circuit correlations need to be established. In this presentation we discuss how to obtain stochastic BTI data for discrete SRAM and logic device beyond 3s, address device-to-circuit correlations using ring-oscillators and explore self-heating effects in FinFET and SOI devices. Technical Talk: Effects of Beam Misalignment on the Performance of Millimeter-Wave Cellular Networks
Technical Talk: Effects of Beam Misalignment on the Performance of Millimeter-Wave Cellular Networks
Dr. Muhammad Saad Zia will give a technical talk titles "Effects of Beam Misalignment on the Performance of Millimeter-Wave Cellular Networks". The talk presents an approach to model the effect of beam alignment errors arising due to inaccurate channel estimation and analyze the impact on the system-level performance of a directional millimeter-wave (mm-wave) cellular network. Specifically, by modeling the variance of the beam alignment errors in terms of link parameters and utilizing stochastic geometric techniques, the loss in the achievable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and rate coverage of the network is quantified. The talk considers two network configurations: 1) Modeling and analysis of a mm-wave only network with single-user beamforming at the BS and an isotropic antenna at the user, and 2) Extension to a heterogeneous network consisting of sub-6 GHz and mm-wave BSs. Cybersecurity for Battery Energy Storage Systems
Cybersecurity for Battery Energy Storage Systems
Abstract: Grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are being connected to the power grid to help with grid services and increasing power demands. BESSs contain stacks of battery cells that are controlled and managed by battery management systems (BMSs). Some critical functions of BMSs are sensing, estimating battery states like the state of charge (SoC), and balancing cells; BMS sensors are susceptible to cyberattacks like false data injection attacks (FDIAs) which can be used to corrupt SoC estimation, and could result in thermal runaway events. As part of a defense in depth cybersecurity approach for BESSs, cyberattack detection methods are needed within BMSs to monitor for cyber intrusions. In this talk, a three-pronged method combining battery modeling, estimating, and a recursive summation algorithm is used to detect FDIAs targeting battery voltage sensors. The method consistently exhibits accurate FDIA detection with false positive rates as low as 0%. Speaker: Victoria O’Brien is a Senior Member of Technical Staff in the Electric Grid Security and Communications Department at Sandia National Laboratories. She obtained a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Texas Tech University in 2020, 2021, and 2023, respectively. Oil Level Monitoring
Oil Level Monitoring
We will look at a clever design for determining how much oil remains in an oil tank. Such a device can be used by oil delivery services to keep track of their customers. Oil delivery services monitor their customers' tanks for a few reasons: - for contract deliveries, to avoid “runouts”, - for COD deliveries, to prompt customers for a fill, - to ensure customer retention, and - to eliminate the reliance on the K-factor, which is the basis for a guess as to what is the level of an unmonitored tank. Arnold Stillman, founder of POEM Technology, the company that developed this system will present the design of a tank monitor that uses a pressure tube to measure liquid levels. Using a pressure tube allows monitoring buried tanks where competing sensing methods do not work. Some of the topics that will be discussed include: - The economics of heating oil delivery - Types of tanks - Types of tank monitors - Pumpless manometry - Cellular IoT Economics - IoT Protocols - IoT Hardware Design - IoT backend - User interface Speaker(s): Arnold Stillman Agenda: 7:00 PM Networking and Announcements 7:20 PM Presentation Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/441928

2D Materials for Next-Generation Electronics: From Low-Power Logic to Monolithic Memory
2D Materials for Next-Generation Electronics: From Low-Power Logic to Monolithic Memory
Silicon has been the dominant material for electronic computing for decades, but it is well-known that Moore’s law is long dead. Therefore, a fervent search for (i) new semiconductors that could directly replace silicon or (ii) new architectures with novel materials/devices added onto silicon or (iii) new physics/state-variables or a combination of above has been the subject of much of the electronic materials and devices research of the past 2 decades. This is not possible without fundamental innovation in new electronic materials and devices. Therefore, I will make the case that novel layered two-dimensional (2D) chalcogenide materials and three-dimensional (3D) nitride materials might present interesting avenues to overcome some of the limitations being faced by Silicon hardware. I will present our work on integration of 2D chalcogenide semiconductors with Silicon to realize low-power tunnelling field effect transistors. In particular I will focus on In-Se based 2D semiconductors for this application and extend discussion on them to phase-pure, epitaxial thin-film growth over wafer scales, at temperatures low-enough to be compatible with back end of line (BEOL) processing in Silicon fabs. I will then discuss memory devices from 2D materials when integrated with emerging wurtzite structure ferroelectric nitride materials namely aluminium scandium nitride (AlScN). First, I will present on Ferroelectric Field Effect Transistors (FEFETs) made from 2D materials when integrated with AlScN and make the case for 2D semiconductors in this application. Next I will introduce our work on Ferroelectric Diode (FeD) devices also based on thin AlScN. I will also present how FeDs provide a unique advantage in compute-in-memory (CIM) architectures for efficient storage, search and hardware implementation of neural networks. Finally, I will present ongoing work and opportunities to extend the application of AlScN ferrodiodes into extreme environments, scaling them and integration with SiC electronics. I will end the talk with a broad perspective on the role of novel materials and heterostructures in semiconductor technologies for electronic computing. Signal Processing Design for Audio Effects
Signal Processing Design for Audio Effects
[] This presentation describes open-source software and guides we have assembled into a digital audio effects development kit, and our efforts using these resources in our annual FX Hackathon event held at WPI. Audio processes and their uses in musical contexts is a challenging subject area. We have addressed this difficulty by creating an effect development kit including a software-based tool to facilitate rapid effect prototyping and guides for assembling hardware around a microcontroller housed in a guitar pedal stompbox-sized enclosure. With these resources, students need only focus on understanding the specific audio process they wish to implement into an effect and then use these resources to realize the effect in a standalone device. What is the Electric Guitar Innovation Lab (EGIL) @ WPI? Through the Electric Guitar Innovation Lab, WPI students and faculty work together in a variety of interdisciplinary and open-ended projects to develop new innovations related to the electric guitar, including the modification to instruments and components, stompboxes and other effects processors, amplifiers and speaker components, and related inventions and adaptations. We routinely reverse-engineer, 3D model ,3D scan, program and adapt existing parts and tools, and then create tool-pathing operations, fabricate parts, and perform real-world and software-based simulations. AI Talks with Coffee/Tea No:V: Exploring the Potential of Deep-Learning and Machine-Learning in Dual-Band Antenna Design
Exploring the Potential of Deep-Learning and Machine-Learning in Dual-Band Antenna Design Keywords Antennas, Dual Band, Computational Modeling, Mathematical Models, Antenna Arrays, Training, Accuracy, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Antenna Design, Dual Band Antennas, AI Antenna, Deep Learning, Antenna Design, Dual Band Antenna, Dual Band Antenna Design, Neural Network, Support Vector Machine, Design Process, Machine Learning Models, Machine Learning Techniques, Design Parameters, Internet Of Things, Reflection Coefficient, Operating Frequency, Regression Problem, Residual Network, Wireless Communication Systems, Internet Of Things Applications, Modern Communication, Antenna Performance, Residual Neural Network, Electromagnetic Simulation, Multiple Outputs, Neurons In Layer, Hidden Layer, Internet Of Things Devices, Res Net Model, Horizontal Stripes, Vertical Stripes, Simulation Technology, Traditional Antenna Abstract This article presents an in-depth exploration of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) for the optimization and design of dual-band antennas in Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Dual-band antennas, which are essential for the functionality of current and forthcoming flexible wireless communication systems, face increasing complexity and design challenges as demands and requirements for IoT-connected devices become more challenging. The study demonstrates how artificial intelligence (AI) can streamline the antenna design process, enabling customization for specific frequency ranges or performance characteristics without exhaustive manual tuning. By utilizing ML and DL tools, this research not only enhances the efficiency of the design process but also achieves optimal antenna performance with significant time savings. The integration of AI in antenna design marks a notable advancement over traditional methods, offering a systematic approach to achieving dual-band functionality tailored to modern communication needs. We approached the antenna design as a regression problem, using the reflection coefficient, operating frequency, bandwidth, and voltage standing wave ratio as input parameters. The ML and DL models then are used to predict the corresponding design parameters for the antenna by using 1,000 samples, from which 700 are allocated for training and 300 for testing. This effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated through the successful application of various ML techniques, including Fine Gaussian Support Vector Machines (SVM), as well as Regressor and Residual Neural Networks (ResNet) with different activation functions, to optimize the design of a dual-band T-shaped monopole antenna, thereby substantiating AI's transformative potential in antenna design. Data-Driven CSI Compression for MIMO Systems and Detecting Feedback Drift
Data-Driven CSI Compression for MIMO Systems and Detecting Feedback Drift
Deep neural networks make it possible to learn key characteristics of data without having to assume mathematically tractable models. This in turn results in an ability to compress data in a model-free way. One of the promising areas for the application of deep learning to the physical layer of communication networks is compression. Hundred-fold compression with a small loss of the CSI in massive MIMO systems has been shown to be both feasible and necessary. However, model-free and data driven compression comes with a downside: the encoding and decoding models need to be trained on a large set of CSI arrays indicative of a wide spectrum of propagation and environmental conditions. As a result, in the early stages of the deployment of deep CSI compression models, it would be necessary to detect if and when users’ channels have drifted significantly away from the distribution of the CSI data on which the deep compression model was trained. In this paper, we present both 1) a technique for detecting harmful channel drift and 2) a lightweight scheme for fine-tuning the deep compression models to adjust to such shifts. Using public-domain synthetic channel data as well as 3GPP-compliant simulated data, we demonstrate the practicality of our proposed deep compression and detection framework. We close with recommendations for a viable implementation of the proposed drift detection by the standards bodies. Toward Trustworthy AI/ML in 6G Networks through Explainable Reasoning
Toward Trustworthy AI/ML in 6G Networks through Explainable Reasoning
Special Presentation by Dr. Farhad Rezazadeh (CTTC, Spain) Hosted by the Future Networks Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (AIML) Working Group Date/Time: Thursday, November 21st, 2024 @ 12:00 UTC Topic: Toward Trustworthy AI/ML in 6G Networks through Explainable Reasoning Abstract: This talk emphasizes the importance of trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI) in 6G networks in response to growing global attention on AI governance. Notable initiatives such as the White House's Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of AI, DARPA's Assured Neuro-Symbolic Learning and Reasoning and eXplainable AI (XAI) programs, and the European Union's AI Act, highlight the increasing regulatory focus on AI transparency and responsibility. As 6G networks transition from AI-native to automation-native, the need for explainability and trustworthiness becomes critical, especially in mission-critical and high-stakes applications. Traditional post-hoc explainability methods, which aim to explain AI decisions after they are made, are no longer adequate in complex network environments. Instead, in-hoc explainability or explanation-guided techniques – where explanations guide the learning process itself – is emerging as a crucial approach for establishing trust in AI systems from the ground up. Indeed, integrating explanatory mechanisms directly within AI learning models enables transparent decisions and enhances learning. Furthermore, incorporating neuro-symbolic approaches, which combine neural networks with symbolic reasoning, provides a robust framework to tackle the increasing complexity of 6G networks. By integrating these approaches, AI systems can make more explainable, contextually guided decisions, boosting trust and performance while mitigating risks associated with black-box AI models. Speaker: Farhad Rezazadeh received his Ph.D. degree (Excellent Cum Laude) in Signal Theory and Communications from the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), Barcelona, Spain. He is currently a researcher (Sr. Applied AI Engineer) at the Telecommunications Technological Center of Catalonia (CTTC), Barcelona, Spain. He participated in 8 European and National 5G/B5G/6G R&D projects with leading and technical tasks in the areas of Applied AI. His AI innovation in B5G/6G resource allocation was recognized as a great EU-funded Innovation by the European Commission's Innovation Radar. He was awarded the first patent connected to the H2020 5G-SOLUTIONS project. He was a secondee at NEC Lab Europe and had scientific missions at TUM, Germany, TUHH, Germany, and UdG, Spain. He is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Ph.D. grantee, winning five different IEEE/IEEE ComSoc grants, two European Cooperation in Science and Technology grants, and a Catalan Government Ph.D. Grant. He is an active member of ACM Professional, IEEE Young Professionals, and IEEE Spain - Technical Activities and Standards, with more than 29 top-tier journals/conferences and book chapters. A novel Grid Forming Controls (GFM) model in PSS/E for 100% renewable power grid
A novel Grid Forming Controls (GFM) model in PSS/E for 100% renewable power grid
A technical presentation on the topic 'A novel Grid Forming Controls (GFM) model in PSS/E for 100% renewable grids'. Increased proliferation of Inverter Based Resources (IBRs) and retirement of conventional power generation has resulted in depleted short circuit levels and has raised stability concerns in operating electric grids. Majority of the IBRs today are Grid Following (GFL) meaning they require a voltage and frequency reference for their Phase Locked Loop and 'follow' and latch onto, in order to inject current to the grid. As short circuit levels drop, GFLs suffer from instability raising concerns. Grid-forming inverters (GFMs) are a promising solution in this regard as they behave as voltage sources behind an internal impedance, providing both voltage and frequency regulation. This talk will focus on a novel positive sequence model developed in PSS/E that has several levels of control that works in both grid connected and islanded mode of operation. Alongside an outer layer that generates Voltage and Frequency reference, a V-Q, P-F droop based current controller is utilized eventually form a voltage source interface. Simulation results will be shown that demonstrate stability in 100% renewable grids. During this presentation Tamojit present his work on GFM. We invite all those interested in clean energy and the future of our renewable grid to join us for this insightful session. Agenda: Starts at 7.00PM Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/434368
Sustainable Website Design: Construction and Presentation Methods to Address Climate Change
Sustainable Website Design: Construction and Presentation Methods to Address Climate Change
With climate change already here and its effects all around us, it’s urgent to continue efforts across all industries to reduce CO2 emissions. But what about the information technology sector? The World-Wide Web we depend on enriches our lives in many areas: education, commerce, government, news, communication, and more. However, the infrastructure that enables it uses a lot of electricity — not all of which is generated from renewable resources (hence its CO2 generation.) Combining the fields of computers and the environment, a relatively new Website construction method called “Sustainable Web Design” is gaining awareness. This software-based approach reduces non-renewable energy to lower CO2 emissions so the people of today and tomorrow can benefit from everything that the Web offers. How a Website is constructed and presents its information has real-world effects! A Website can be built to serve smaller files, use less resources, and require less processing power — all of these help reduce non-renewable energy use and associated CO2 emissions. Sustainable Web Design also has side-benefits: a faster Website, better mobile device battery life, higher-placed mobile Google search results, and better accessibility. This presentation will introduce how to determine a Website’s sustainability, identify elements which can slow down a Web page, describe basic sustainable Web design strategies and techniques, offer easy to take actions and examples, present the perspective and advice of a Website Designer/Webmaster who remade his organization’s Website to be sustainable, and list additional resources to follow the latest developments. IEEE NY JOINT MTT AP PHO & NANO CHAPTER – SEMINAR: Nonlinear Photonics in the Mid-Infrared and Terahertz
IEEE NY JOINT MTT AP PHO & NANO CHAPTER – SEMINAR: Nonlinear Photonics in the Mid-Infrared and Terahertz
Abstract – Optical sensing at long wavelengths presents significant opportunities and significant challenges. The longwave infrared and terahertz ranges are renowned for their potential to sense molecules in a variety of contexts, such as high-speed chemical imaging, disease detection, and environmental monitoring; however, their promise has yet to be fulfilled due to a lack of compact broadband sources and low-loss integrated photonics platforms. The most important sensing challenges require extremely wideband sources to achieve specificity and selectivity, but to date, there are no technologies that are compact, bright, and broadband. I will discuss some of the work of my group that seeks to address this challenge. First, I will discuss our development of quantum cascade laser-based frequency combs, light sources that fill the gap between broadband incoherent sources and lasers. I will also discuss how our experimental investigations of these combs led to my discovery of a new fundamental comb state that manifests in almost any laser at any wavelength, acting as the phase equivalent of passive modelocking , . Next, I will discuss our recent development of ultra-low-loss platforms for long wavelengths based on hybrid photonic integration, which allowed us to create optical resonators in the longwave infrared with quality factors 100 times better than the state-of-the-art , . This approach is fully wavelength-scalable and allows for the first efficient nonlinear optics at long wavelengths, serving as a foundational element for future applications in quantum sensing. Finally, I will discuss our development of ptychoscopy, a new sensing modality that allows for ultra-precise measurements of optical spectra. This measurement enables the measurement of remote signals with quantum-limited frequency resolution over the entire bandwidth of a comb, for the first time allowing incoherent spectra to be characterized with the precision techniques of combs .
