Deep Learning With Applications
September 21 through November 2, 2024. Six Saturdays 1:30-4:30pm (9/21, 9/28, 10/5, 10/19, 10/26, 11/2). The IEEE North Jersey Section Communications Society Chapter is offering a course entitled "DEEP LEARNING WITH APPLICATIONS". Deep learning is a transformative field within artificial intelligence and machine learning that has revolutionized our ability to solve complex problems in various domains, including computer vision, natural language processing, and reinforcement learning. This hands-on course on deep learning is designed to provide students with an understanding how these amazing successes are made possible by drawing inspiration from the way that brains, both human and otherwise, operate. Students will gain a comprehensive foundation in the principles, techniques, and applications of deep neural networks. Learning how to solve real data-set based applications will teach students how to really apply deep learning with Python programming software. Participants will be asked to design and train deep neural networks to perform tasks such as image classification using commonly available data sets. However, participants are encouraged to apply the techniques from this course to other data sets according to their interests. Discuss with the instructor in order to propose your own project. More importantly, this will set the foundations for understanding and developing Generative AI applications. The IEEE North Jersey Section's Communications Society Chapter can arrange for providing IEEE CEUs - Continuing Education Units (for a $5 charge) upon completion of the course. Introduction to Neural Networks: Explore the fundamental concepts of artificial neural networks, backpropagation, activation functions, and gradient descent, laying the groundwork for deep learning understanding. 2. Introduction to PyTorch: Learn how to implement and train neural networks using PyTorch one of the most popular deep learning frameworks. Understand tensors. 3. Computer Vision Applications: Apply deep learning to computer vision problems, including image classification and object detection using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) 4. Training and Optimizing Deep Neural Networks: Study techniques for training deep neural networks effectively, including optimization algorithms, weight initialization, regularization, and dropout. 5. Sequential Data Analysis: Explore how deep learning is used to analyze sequential data using Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs). In particular, explore how neural networks are used in Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks such as sentiment analysis and machine translation. 6. Generative AI: Overview of generative ai techniques that leverage the patterns present in a dataset to generate new content. Applications of generative ai include large language models such as ChatGPT and image generation models such as Midjourney and Stable Diffusion. This course assumes a basic understanding of machine learning concepts and programming skills in Python. Familiarity with linear algebra and calculus will be beneficial, but not mandatory. Statistical software (Python, Scikit-learn) and Deep Learning Frameworks (Pytorch, TensorFlow) will be used throughout the course for the exploration of different learning algorithms and for the creation of appropriate graphics for analysis. Learning objectives: Subjects covered include these and other deep learning related materials: artificial neural networks, training deep neural networks, RNN, CNN, image recognition, natural language processing, GANs, data processing techniques, and NN architectures. The course is intended to be subdivided into 3-hour sessions. Each lecture is further subdivided into lecture, guided and independent project based exercises to build experience with hands-on techniques. This course will be held at FDU - Teaneck, NJ campus. Technical Requirements: Students will need access to the Python programming language. In addition to a standard Python installation, most programming exercises will use the package Scikit-learn. Basic programming skills and some familiarity with the Python language are assummed. Students are expected to be able to bring a laptop onto which most of these libraries can be pre-installed using python's pip install. Most of the coding in this course will use the Python programming language. Coding examples and labs will be distributed in the form of Juypter notebooks. Many physics laws and mathematical rules are insensitive to order. For example, the addition of numbers disregards the sequence order, e.g., 1+2+3=3+1+2. However, such a commutative property does not always hold. When the outcomes of a set of operations depend on the execution order, they can become “non-Abelian.” In the 20th century, non-Abelian mathematical frameworks have played profound roles in formulating many fundamental laws of modern physics. Famous examples include the classification of hadrons and the unification of electro-weak interactions. Classical physics, such as mechanics, electromagnetism, and optics, were well established before non-Abelian theories came into play. However, this does not mean non-Abelian effects are absent in the classical world. One prominent example is a Rubik’s Cube—the moves made on the cube do not always commute: two sequential moves done in different orders do not necessarily get the color palettes to the same layout. We then ask: how and when non-Abelian phenomena arise in classical waves? Delving into this question, our recent works leverage Berry-phase matrices, which capture the adiabatic evolution of multiple states, to realize non-Abelian braiding in acoustics and photonics . Here, the braiding operations are implemented using coupled waveguide arrays, which are adiabatically modulated along the guiding direction to enforce a multi-state Berry-phase matrix that swaps the modal dwell sites. The evolution of the guiding modes maps to the generators of braid groups. The non-Abelian characteristics are revealed by switching the order of two distinct braiding operations involving at least three modes. Join IEEE Rochester Section members for the 2024 Antique Wireless Association Conference, October 1-5, 2024, at the RIT Inn and Conference Center in Henrietta, NY, just South of Rochester and conveniently located near the NYS Thruway. A highlight of each year is the annual gathering in the Rochester, NY area for a multi-day event of fellowship, information exchange, flea marketing, and the sharing of communications history and technology. In addition to a series of presentations and the flea market each year, an AWA Museum open house provides all the information needed to explore changes to the collection displays over the past year. Buyers and sellers can attend the flea market for free starting Thursday and running through Friday (October 3 and 4). We invite you to register for the Conference and enjoy all it offers, but you don’t need to register to sell in the flea market. He has 10 Patents; over 80 Publications and in 2023 published his autobiography. Next generation of wireless power transfer network of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS
This talk highlights the next generation of wireless power transfer (WPT) network concept that is scalable, safe, and efficient and can be deployed in a UAS by incorporating waveform engineering, electromechanical beamforming, integrated phased-array antenna, and transmitter (TX)/receiver (RX) co-design. Although interest in radiative (far-field) WPT using beamforming has been growing rapidly because of its capability to energize a large number of autonomous devices, most of these works are still in the theoretical phase without any practical implementation. This talk presents the implementation of a distributed beamforming network using a bottom-up approach (from the antenna to the inter-connected network) that is highly important for addressing the challenges associated with a dynamically changing environment. Practical system-level implementation strategies and multi-scale and multi-technique approaches to building a resilient WPT network for UAVs will be discussed. First, the challenges associated with the dual approach of electrical beamforming and the mechanical steering of the TX antennas to maximize the RF-RF link efficiency will be discussed. Secondly, an investigation of the efficient rectifier circuitry designed on-chip as well as commercial off-the-shelf components (COTS) to maximize the power conversion efficiency RF-DC efficiency will be presented. Finally, future research directions on increasing the power transfer distance to scale up the amount of power delivered to the load for the proposed wireless power beaming network system will be highlighted. [] On this celebratory IEEE Day, let us rejoice in the combined IEEE worldwide activities of 39 technical societies and 7 interdisciplinary councils on one side of the IEEE coin, balanced with local sections and student chapters, bringing a physical presence of IEEE to local communities. By the way, one could argue that IEEE also has a 3rd leg into humanitarian activities. These S/C span a great swathe from hardware to software, including electronic devices, solar/wind energy production, power transmission, control theory, image compression, signal processing, and computer architecture. One could say this moves from applied physics to applied math. However, this session drills down to predominantly 1 of these societies, the electron device society, where the field of semiconductor materials and devices thrives. The Zero Trust framework, based on the idea of verifying and authorizing access at every step, regardless of user location or device, offers a solid solution. Adding Artificial Intelligence to this approach makes it even more effective by enabling smarter threat detection, continuous monitoring, and adaptive security measures. This talk looks at how AI improves zero-trust networks, focusing on AI algorithms like Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) that can track network behavior over time to spot unusual activity and potential threats. AI also helps prioritize which threats need the most attention using risk scoring, making it easier to handle the most serious risks first. With AI-powered monitoring, even small security issues can be detected and addressed in real time, improving response times and overall protection. Abstract: As device technologies evolve and continue to shrink, manufacturing methods are also being stressed, which can impact yields due to ESD performance. ESD test standards are continuing to evolve as well to meet these changes. However as complex devices such as 3D packing with 1000s of Die to Die interconnects become more widely used, this is challenging the “standard” way ESD testing is performed. Another point of interest for system level testing, is call for a Direct Pin Injection test method. Although the most widely used system level testing standard, IEC 61000-4-2 standard recommends not performing testing on pins of a connector, many manufacturers are being forced to perform this test. We’ll discuss the Industry Councils on ESD Target Levels approaches to this testing requirement. As the demand for high-performance computing continues to surge, driven largely by advances in artificial intelligence and other data-intensive applications, the semiconductor industry faces growing challenges in meeting these requirements. Traditional approaches, constrained by the slowing of Moore’s Law and the end of Dennard Scaling, are proving inadequate in addressing the exponential increase in compute and bandwidth needs. Silicon Photonics is emerging as a key technology to overcome these limitations. By leveraging the unique properties of silicon for optical communication, Silicon Photonics can offer significant improvements in data transmission speeds and energy efficiency compared to conventional electrical interconnects. This technology has the potential to reduce latency and power consumption, making it a compelling solution for next-generation data centers and high-performance computing systems. Advanced Packaging Technologies are equally critical in this evolving landscape. [] Ionization profile monitors (IPMs) are widely used in accelerators for non-destructive and fast diagnostics of high energy particle beams. These monitors provide information of particle beam shape and dynamics. Profile monitors extract from the passing beam the vertical and horizontal distributions of the beam particles, be they electrons, protons or heavier ions. RF Design for Ultra-Low-Power Wireless Communication Systems
This presentation shows radio frequency (RF) design solutions for wireless sensor nodes to address sustainability issues in the Internet of Things (IoT), which arise due to the massive deployment of wireless IoT nodes on environmental and economic levels. Engineers can apply these RF design solutions to improve the ultra-low-power operation of IoT nodes, avoid batteries’ eco-toxicity, and decrease maintenance costs due to battery replacement. The solutions offer high integration levels based on system-on-chip and system-in-package concepts in low-cost complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technologies to limit these nodes’ costs and footprints. In particular, the presentation covers solutions for ultra-low-power wireless communication systems based on high-frequency (HF) and ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) technologies. The talk offers RF design solutions for HF and UHF RFID systems, revealing how to develop passive miniaturized IoT nodes that operate robustly in harsh application environments. IEEE MIT Undergraduate Research Technology Conference (URTC) will be hosting the 2024 MIT Micromouse Competition on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at 6:00pm to 8:30pm. Competition Guideline: (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oug6NgCnbRZzPLArwnRas28Y0ZIDwEHq/view?usp=drive_link) A Micromouse is a small robot vehicle that is able to navigate its way through an unknown maze. It is autonomous, battery-operated and self-contained, encompassing computer technology, robotics and artificial intelligence. The main challenge for the Micromouse designers is to import the Micromouse with an adaptive intelligence which enables exploration of different maze configurations, and to work out the optimum route with the shortest run time from start to destination and back. In addition, the Micromouse must reliably negotiate the maze at a very high speed without crashing into the maze walls. The objective of the competition is to build a Micromouse that can negotiate a specified maze in the shortest time. All IEEE Student Members and Graduate Student Members are eligible to participate. High School Students (non-IEEE Member) are also welcome to participate, but they need to attend a 30 minutes introduction session about IEEE and how IEEE can help them when they are an Undergraduate Student at a college. Whether your Micromouse is not quite functioning, or you have no Micromouse yet, you are welcome to participate. Besides the usual awards towards the fastest maze solvers, there is an award for the best Micromouse design. This contest will focus on the overall design as demonstrated by an oral presentation. Although there is no specific format required for the presentation, the following guidelines should be used for preparing for the presentation. The team should plan to address the following points in the presentation: ❖ Overall design goals and strategies ❖ High level structure of the design (mechanical, control) ❖ Design choices for sub functions (locomotion, sensing, etc) ❖ Overview of software ❖ Implementation and testing process and results ❖ Conclusions We encourage groups to feature the most innovative part (coding, mechanical design, etc) during the design presentation. You can give the Oral Presentation while running your micromouse. Each presentation/micromouse run will be 5 minutes, with another up to 5 minutes for questions. Please help to promote the MIT Micromouse competition and encourage your students or friends to participate. If you, school robotics club or IEEE Student Branch have been working on designing and building a Micromouse project/program, this competition at MIT will be a great venue to celebrate your achievement and what you have learnt. If you have not worked on Micromouse, and you are interested to develop one, you should start now. It is only about 3 weeks left to the competition. But it is not too late to start the development. You are allowed to get a robot kit and do your best to build and program your Micromouse to solve the maze. You should still consider participating this year competition even your Micromouse is not fully function or is not moving. The main challenge for the Micromouse designers is to import the Micromouse with an adaptive intelligence which enables exploration of different maze configurations, and to work out the optimum route with the shortest run time from start to destination and back. In addition, the Micromouse must reliably negotiate the maze at a very high speed without crashing into the maze walls. The objective of the competition is to build a Micromouse that can negotiate a specified maze in the shortest time. High School Students (non-IEEE Member) are also welcome to participate, but they need to attend a 30 minutes introduction session about IEEE and how IEEE can help them when they are an Undergraduate Student at a college. Whether your Micromouse is not quite functioning, or you have no Micromouse yet, you are welcome to participate. Besides the usual awards towards the fastest maze solvers, there is an award for the best Micromouse design. This contest will focus on the overall design as demonstrated by an oral presentation. Although there is no specific format required for the presentation, the following guidelines should be used for preparing for the presentation. The team should plan to address the following points in the presentation: ❖ Overall design goals and strategies ❖ High level structure of the design (mechanical, control) ❖ Design choices for sub functions (locomotion, sensing, etc) ❖ Overview of software ❖ Implementation and testing process and results ❖ Conclusions We encourage groups to feature the most innovative part (coding, mechanical design, etc) during the design presentation. You can give the Oral Presentation while running your micromouse. Each presentation/micromouse run will be 5 minutes, with another up to 5 minutes for questions. If you have not worked on Micromouse, and you are interested to develop one, you should start now. It is only about 2 weeks left to the competition. But, it is not too late to start the development. You are allow to get a robot kit, and do your best to build and program your Micromouse to solve the maze. You should still consider to participate this year competition even your Micromouse is not fully function, or is not moving. There is a judging award for Best Design Micromouse and Innovative Program, and the Micromouse does not have to perform well in the maze. Medical images constitute a core portion of the information physicians utilize to render diagnostic and treatment decisions. At a fundamental level, the diagnostic process involves two aspects – visually inspecting the image (perception) and rendering an interpretation (cognition). Key indications of expert interpretation of medical images are consistent, accurate and efficient diagnostic performance, but how do we know when someone has attained the level of training required to be considered an expert? How do we know the best way to present images to the clinician to optimize accuracy and efficiency? Artificial intelligence schemes are being developed to assist with medical image acquisition, interpretation, and treatment decision-making, but to optimize and integrate these tools into everyday clinical routines, we need to consider both the technology and the human part of the human-technology interface equation. The advent of digital imaging and associated tools in many clinical specialties, including radiology, pathology, and dermatology, has dramatically changed the way that clinicians view images, how residents are trained, and thus potentially the way they interpret image information, emphasizing our need to understand how clinicians interact with the information in an image during the interpretation process. With improved understanding using tools such as eye-tracking we can develop ways to further improve decision-making and thus improve patient care. Compact Models (CMs) for circuit simulation have been at the heart of CAD tools for bridging circuit design and technology development over the past decades. In this talk, we begin with an overview of the historical role of CMs and fundamental equations. Evolution of MOSFET CMs, from bulk to SOI and FinFETs, is reviewed and their inter-relationships discussed. Unification of CMs with the unified regional modeling (URM) approach is presented, together with model validation with numerical data and verification with experimental data. Model extension to III-V HEMTs including 2-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in multiple sub-bands and trap-charge effects is presented. The number of connected devices is expected to reach 500 billion by 2030, which is 59-times larger than the expected world population. Objects will become the dominant users of next-generation communications and sensing at untethered, wireline-like broadband performance, bandwidths, and throughputs. This sub-terahertz 6G communication and sensing will integrate security and intelligence. It will enable a 10x to 100x increase in peak data rates. FPGAs are well positioned to enable intelligent radios for 6G when coupled with high-performance chiplets incorporating RF circuits, data converters, and digital baseband circuits incorporating machine learning and security. This talk presents use of 2.5D and 3D heterogeneous integration of FPGAs with chiplets, leveraging Intel’s EMIB/Foveros technologies with focus on one emerging application driver: FPGA-based 6G sub-THz intelligent wireless systems. Nano-, micro-, and macro-3D heterogeneous integration is summarized, and previous research in 2.5D chiplet integration with FPGAs is leveraged to forge a path towards new 3D-FPGA based 6G platforms. Challenges in antenna, packaging, power delivery, system architecture design, thermals, and integrated design methodologies/tools are briefly outlined. Opportunities to standardize die-to-die interfaces for modular integration of internal and external circuit IPs are also discussed. In this webinar, we will discuss the latest developments at NY CREATES in the scalable fabrication of quantum devices. We will highlight our work with superconducting materials such as Ta, Nb, Al, and their oxides and nitrides, detailing the painstaking work required to reformulate CMOS processes to those designed for quantum technologies, which have a wide range of application including in communications, quantum computing, sensing, data security, solid state electronics, nanotechnology, photonics, quantum circuits, advanced fabrication, superconducting digital logic, and superconducting optoelectronics neuromorphic computing. With specific examples, we will illustrate how we leverage decades of learning from the CMOS industry, aiming to enable the fabrication of devices with tightly controlled performance characteristics. We will present the synergistic nature of our process development strategy, that advances a variety of quantum technologies at 300 mm wafer scale. These efforts are essential to establish a well-defined superconducting quantum process design kit (SQPDK) and facilitate the fabrication of quantum circuits that are faithful to designer intent, in a true ‘quantum foundry’ model. Since before the passage of CHIPS and Science Act in summer 2022, federal and state governments, companies and universities have stepped up the effort to revitalize the entire semiconductor supply chain in the U.S. We will review Purdue University’s initiatives in this area and draw some lessons on universities’ role in talent development, research moonshots, and public private partnership. ABOUT THE SPEAKER Professor Mung Chiang, President of Purdue University Mung Chiang is the 13th president of Purdue University and the Roscoe H. George Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He was previously the John A. Edwardson Dean of the College of Engineering and executive vice president for strategic initiatives at Purdue University, as well as the Arthur LeGrand Doty Professor of Electrical Engineering at Princeton University. Chiang founded the Princeton EDGE Lab in 2009 and then founded several startup companies and industry consortia in edge computing. As the Science and Technology Adviser to the U.S. Secretary of State in 2020, he initiated tech diplomacy programs for the U.S. government. Currently he serves on the inaugural board of the U.S. Foundation for Energy Security and Innovation and several corporate and nonprofit boards. Chiang received his BS (1999), MS (2000) and PhD (2003) from Stanford University and an honorary doctorate (2024) from Dartmouth College. Optical frequency combs, with their unique features in both the time and frequency domains, have transformed precision science and engineering over the last two decades. In this lecture, I will present on the latest progress in the ultralow-noise frequency combs and their applications with an emphasis on precision timing, synchronization, and microwave/mm-wave photonics. Both mode-locked laser combs and chip-scale micro-combs can reach quantum-limited timing jitter performances, which allows for various timing applications with unprecedented precision. I will present innovative comb timing applications including attosecond optical timing, on-chip clock distribution networks, ultralow-noise microwave/mm-wave signal generation, photonic analog-to-digital conversion, ranging, imaging and vibration sensing, and timing and synchronization for ultrafast X-ray/electron science and radio astronomy. A major hurdle in developing next-generation systems for high-performance applications and industries that require handling large, secure data - such as System-in-Package (SiP) and System-on-Chip (SoC) - is the absence of low-latency, high-bandwidth, and high-density off-chip/chiplet/core interconnects. Achieving high-bandwidth chip-to-chip (or chiplet-to-chiplet) communication using electrical interconnects faces challenges like high substrate dielectric losses, reflections, impedance discontinuities, and susceptibility to crosstalk. This underscores the motivation to adopt photonics to address these challenges and enable low-latency, high-bandwidth communication. CubeSat, CubeSat Antennas, and Link Budget Analysis
CubeSat, a modular type of standardized modern small satellites, have been gaining steady popularity and attention from universities and space industries. In addition to education purpose, CubeSats have various promising applications as low-cost space exploration vehicles for technology demonstrations, multi-point observations of space environment, and monitoring/reporting proper deployment of expensive deep space instruments. Antennas are critical components for CubeSat missions. A CubeSat antenna may provide some or all of the following functions: telemetry, tracking, command (TT\&C), high speed downlink for payload data, receiving positioning data, and inter-satellite cross links. Most often, different antennas are required to keep the CubeSat assembly in modular fashion. On the other hand, antenna engineers strive to create solutions that could pack more functionality into one unit. This brings up a need to understand basics of CubeSat development cycle and link budget analysis, so that an electrical engineer would have sound knowledge of limiting factors (posed by the mechanical system and hardware of a CubeSat) to the antennas design. With rapid advancement of electronics, novel mechanical design, and aerospace technology, new progress in CubeSats is emerging every day. This calls for interests and early involvements of creative young minds. In the past decade, the global shift towards addressing climate change has highlighted the electric grid as a critical enabler in achieving net-zero emissions. Electrification demands from sectors like transportation and buildings rely heavily on a resilient, reliable grid—especially as extreme weather events, such as wildfires and hurricanes, increasingly challenge its stability. Ensuring continuous power during these events is crucial, both for maintaining infrastructure and minimizing disruption to daily life. As a result, stakeholders across governments, utilities, and regulatory bodies are focusing more than ever on policies and initiatives to enhance grid resiliency. However, a fundamental question arises: how do we effectively measure grid resiliency? Developing metrics that assess the grid's ability to withstand and recover from extreme weather events is essential to ensure progress. This talk will introduce a comprehensive resiliency metric framework, designed to evaluate the grid's performance in adverse weather conditions. The metrics fall under two categories: System Performance, which assesses the grid's ability to endure extreme events, and Operational Performance, measuring its recovery capacity. Kaushik Rajashekara University of Houston, Texas USA The transportation industry is facing challenges in terms of improving emissions and fuel economy, and at the same time reducing the overall cost. The trend is towards replacing mechanical and pneumatic systems with electrical systems, thus transitioning toward “more electric” architectures and electric/hybrid propulsion systems. To meet these challenges in the automotive industry, significant work has been done in the areas of electric, hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles. In the case of airplanes, more electric architecture , fuel cell, and hybrid propulsion strategies are the emerging trends. Recently, there is also an increasing interest in flying cars, and Electrical vertical take-off and landing vehicles (eVTOL) to be used as air taxis. Similar strategies have been adopted in Marine propulsion systems also. This presentation examines present trends and advancements in electric/hybrid vehicles, electric and hybrid aircrafts, hydrogen-based systems, and flying cars/VTOL vehicles. In addition, recent trends in the enabling technologies, power electronics and electric motors, for the advancement of the electrified transportation will be briefly presented. Kaushik Rajashekara (Fellow, IEEE) received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. In 1989, he joined the Delphi division of General Motors Corporation in Indianapolis, USA, as a Staff Project Engineer. In Delphi and General Motors, he held various lead technical and managerial positions, and was a Technical Fellow and the Chief Scientist for developing propulsion and power electronics systems for electric, hybrid, and fuel cell vehicle systems. In 2006, he joined Rolls-Royce Corporation, as a Chief Technologist for electric systems for electric and hybrid aircraft systems. In August 2012, he joined as a Distinguished Professor of Engineering with the University of Texas at Dallas, TX, USA. Since September 2016, he has been a Distinguished Professor of engineering in University of Houston, Houston, TX, USA. He has authored or coauthored over 300 papers in international journals and conferences, has 37 US and 15 foreign patents, and has written one book. He has given over 200 invited presentations in international conferences and universities. He has received a number of awards including the 2022 Global Energy Prize, 2021 IEEE Medal on Environment & Safety Technologies, and 2013 IEEE Richard Harold Kaufmann Award for his contributions to electrification of transportation and renewable energy. He was elected as a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering in 2012, , a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors in 2015, and an International Fellow of Indian (2013), Chinese (2021), and Japanese (2024) Academies of Engineering. IEEE PCJS Broadcast Technology Society is excited to announce the following talk: Digital Television Standards and Their Worldwide Impact Guest Speaker: Glenn Reitmeier Location: Computer Science Building (CS 105) Princeton University, Princeton, NJ Event: October 28, 2024, starting at 7:00pm to 9:00pm Brief abstract of talk: The development of digital standards for broadcast television was a seminal event - it was a pivot from many decades of analog video technology to the world of digital media and video streaming that today's audiences enjoy all over the world. This talk will discuss the technical roots of analog video standards, how the quest for a high-definition broadcast television standard in the 1990s was met by a radical leap to digital technology, the world's first digital TV standard (ATSC), and the recent development of the ATSC 3.0 standard for internet based broadcasting and streaming. Also discussed will be the adoption of digital television standards throughout the world, how government regulators have managed to transition from analog to digital broadcasting and the commercial impact of standards on consumer electronics products from TVs to smart phones. Speaker Bio: Glenn Reitmeier is widely recognized as a technology visionary and pioneer in the television industry. Throughout his career, he has been a leader in establishing revolutionary new digital standards that are now widely used in video production and in content delivery by over-the-air broadcasting, satellite, cable and video streaming over the internet. Now an independent consultant, Glenn is retired from 17 years at NBC Universal as Senior Vice President, Technology Standards and Policy, where he contributed to industry technical standards and to the technical aspects of the company’s government policy positions and commercial agreements. Previously, Glenn spent 25 years in digital video research at RCA/Sarnoff Laboratories. In addition to leading Sarnoff’s work on digital HDTV, his laboratory also spun out six technology startup companies in digital television and media. Glenn has served the industry as a Board member of the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), the North American Broadcasters Associations (NABA) and the Open Authentication Technical Committee (OATC), and he has been Chairman of the Board of both ATSC and OATC. He is a SMPTE Fellow and a recipient of the Progress Medal and the Signal Processing Medal. He is also an inaugural member of the Consumer Technology Association’s (CTA) Academy of Digital Television Pioneers, a recipient of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Television Engineering Award for lifetime achievement and a recipient of the ATSC’s Bernard J. Lechner Award for outstanding technical contributions. Glenn holds over 60 patents, has contributed to many Emmy award winning technologies and is recognized in the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame. He received his B.E.E from Villanova University and an M.S.E in Systems Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. UAV-mounted GPR-SAR systems: a key technology for detecting buried explosive threat
Radar technology plays an important role in our daily lives with applications ranging from security screening for ensuring the safety of the public to structural health monitoring to name a few. In the field of subsurface sensing, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is a key technology for detecting buried explosive threats, such as landmines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). The talk will be focused on GPR systems mounted on board Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), leveraging the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) paradigm to provide high-resolution radar images of the subsurface. This kind of systems brings together the advantages of UAVs (e.g., enabling the inspection of difficult-to-access areas without interacting with the soil) and the capability of radar systems to detect buried targets. In this talk, several prototypes of UAV-mounted GPR-SAR systems tested in realistic scenarios will be presented, showing their success to detect buried threats in realistic scenarios. To reduce global warming and the associated effects, the transportation and energy sectors are adopting measures to make different applications potentially fossil free. This has led to a surge in demand for electric machines and the related design and development efforts. The designs of these electrical machines need to meet various specifications including efficiency and power-density requirements. A multiphysics-based simulation and modeling approach plays a critical role in accomplishing the design needs and significantly reducing the lead time to market. This webinar can draw more attention from energy audience to focus on the grid-interactive efficiency buildings and participate in the SBCS subcommittee and associated task forces. The presented work also provides cutting-edge research outcome for the community. The COMSOL Multiphysics® software and its add-on modules provide the capability needed to model the multiphysics phenomena involved in electrical motors, including electromagnetics, thermal, structural mechanics, and fluid flow. The most common motor types, synchronous permanent magnet, and asynchronous motors, as well as more recently researched alternatives such as synchronous reluctance or axial flux motors, can be modeled and optimized in COMSOL Multiphysics®. This talk will cover practical challenges for cryogenic CMOS designs for next generation quantum computing. Starting from system level, it will detail the design considerations for a non-multiplexed, semi-autonomous, transmon qubit state controller (QSC) implemented in 14nm CMOS FinFET technology. The QSC includes an augmented general-purpose digital processor that supports waveform generation and phase rotation operations combined with a low power current-mode single sideband upconversion I/Q mixer-based RF arbitrary waveform generator (AWG). Implemented in 14nm CMOS FinFET technology, the QSC generates control signals in its target 4.5GHz to 5.5 GHz frequency range, achieving an SFDR > 50dB for a signal bandwidth of 500MHz. With the controller operating in the 4K stage of a cryostat and connected to a transmon qubit in the cryostat’s millikelvin stage, measured transmon T1 and T2 coherence times were 75.5μS and 73 μS, respectively, in each case comparable to results achieved using conventional room temperature controls. In further tests with transmons, a qubit-limited error rate of 7.76x10-4 per Clifford gate is achieved, again comparable to results achieved using room temperature controls.
