Binghamton University, GE Global Research and IBM Research are proud to host the 34th Annual Electronics Packaging Symposium — Small Systems Integration. The program will include two days of exciting invited presentations with a focus on supply chain interconnectivity. We invite you to join us for this event on Sept. 4-5, 2024, at the Binghamton University ITC Complex. We look forward to seeing you in person. Security Considerations for Mobile Edge Computing Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) is a technology framework that brings computational resources, including processing power, storage, and network connectivity, closer to mobile devices and users. In MEC, these resources are deployed at the edge of the cellular network, typically in close proximity to cell towers and base stations. This contrasts with traditional cloud computing, where data processing and s torage occur in centralized data centers that can be distant from the end-user. Key aspects and features of MEC include Low Latency, Proximity, Resource Optimization, Scalability, Context Awareness and Security. Security measures are implemented at the edge to protect sensitive data and ensure the integrity of the network. This can include encryption, access control, and authentication mechanisms. Applications and use cases of MEC are diverse and include AR/VR, IoT, Content Delivery, Connected Vehicles, Smart Grids. MEC is also a critical component in the evolution of 5G networks. The tutorial provides a forum for researchers and engineers from academia and industry to develop a deep understanding of MEC Security. The participants would be exposed to wide and diverse topics in MEC Security, including existing and new attack surfaces and attack vectors along with their mitigation. ABSTRACT 2. 5G NTN Takes Flight: 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks Evolving Towards 6G From the beginning, 3GPPs vision of ubiquitous communication included the usage of satellite or airborne based network components. Heading towards 6G we envision the contribution of NTN into the 6G system, IMT-2030 sets some clear requirements incorporating a non-terrestrial, unified network architecture from it’s inception. Release 17 considered as the start of NTN in 5G targets at enabling non-terrestrial network services. Later releases will enhance the NTN contribution and even if 6G may be an evolution and not a revolution, NTN will play a pivotal role from the advent of 6G. This presentation will outline the technology evolution from the first NTN up to the anticipated technology evolutions on the path to 6G. The NTN technology starts with transparent mode architecture, incorporates regenerative mode and multi-connectivity mobility scenarios on a mid-term basis, and then looks towards long-term aspects like 3D unified and resilient networks, ultimately paving the way towards “beyond cellular” in a 6G network that includes NTN from its inception. In addition we would like to present the evolution of Test and Measurement aspects and how T&M can ensure the successful operation and development of future NTN networks. Special Presentation by Dr. Hao Zhou and Chengming Hu (McGill U., Canada) Hosted by the Future Networks Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (AIML) Working Group Date/Time: Thursday, September 5th, 2024 @ 6 PM EDT Topic: Large Language Models (LLMs) for NextG Wireless Networks: Fundamentals and Case Studies in Network Optimization and Prediction Abstract: Large language models (LLMs) have received considerable attention recently due to their outstanding comprehension and reasoning capabilities, leading to great progress in many fields. The advancement of LLM techniques also offers promising opportunities to automate many tasks in the communication networks field. After pre-training and fine-tuning, LLMs can perform diverse downstream tasks based on human instructions, paving the way to artificial general intelligence (AGI)-enabled 6G. This talk will first present a comprehensive overview of LLM fundamentals and applications to wireless networks, discussing wireless-specific LLM training, fine-tuning, and practical deployment. Then, it will present two case studies on specific network optimization and prediction problems, showing detailed prompt and algorithm designs along with simulation results. Speakers: Dr. Hao Zhou is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the School of Computer Science, McGill University. He completed my PhD degree at University of Ottawa, Canada, from 2019 to 2023. His research focuses on the intersection between machine learning, optimization, and networked systems, especially for 5G/6G wireless networks and power systems. Dr. Zhou is dedicated to developing novel machine learning algorithms to address a series of optimization problems in networked systems, including resource allocation, computational task offloading, energy efficiency enhancement, energy management and trading, network security, etc. He has published more than 30 peer-reviewed papers, including reputable journals in IEEE Communication and Power Energy Societies, e.g., IEEE Wireless Communications, IEEE Trans. Smart Grid, and IEEE Communications Survey & Tutorials. He has received the Best Paper Award at the 2023 IEEE ICC conference, and the 2023 IEEE ComSoc CSIM TC Best Journal Paper Award for his contributions to transfer learning-enabled wireless network slicing. Dr. Zhou’s PhD Thesis entitled “ML-Based Optimization of Large-Scale Systems: Case Study in Smart Microgrids and 5G RAN” won the 2023 Faculty of Engineering’s Best Doctoral Thesis Award at University of Ottawa. Chengming Hu is currently a Ph.D. candidate at McGill University, Canada. He received M.Sc. in Quality Systems Engineering with Concordia Institute for Information Systems Engineering (CIISE), Concordia University, Canada, in 2019. His research interests focus on investigating computational intelligence techniques to enhance the effectiveness and security of IoT systems, including ensemble learning, knowledge distillation, language model, and feature learning, etc. He is actively working on various real-world applications, including power systems, communication systems, and transportation systems. Guest Lecture Focus This lecture considers General-Purpose Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) products marketed as ‘empathic partners’, ‘personal AI’, ‘co-pilots’, ‘assistants’, and related phrasing for ‘human-AI partnering’. Open AI, Inflection, Google, Microsoft, and others, all promise empathic capacities. Current and nascent domains of use include work, therapy, education, life coaching, legal problems, fitness, and entertainment. The lecture focuses on the risks and opportunities of empathic human-AI partnering, what new governance (if any) is required, and the role that soft law standards may play in leading in supporting hard law. To explore empathic human-AI partnering, the lecture will initially provide historical context to these technologies, case examples, and a sense of current governance for technologies used to empathise. With this understanding in place, the lecture will progress to consider need to contrast upstream and downstream understandings of GPAI, complexities of this separation for governance, balancing of short and long-term risks, social and ethical questions unique to empathic human-AI partnering, issues of global cultural variation regarding empathic human-AI partnering, balancing of interests of ethical diversity and unity in creation of soft law and standards, and lessons that can be learned from existing and nascent P7000 standards. Present and future trends in electrification of transportation
Abstract: The transportation industry is facing challenges in terms of improving emissions and fuel economy, and at the same time reducing the overall cost. The trend is towards replacing mechanical and pneumatic systems with electrical systems, thus transitioning toward “more electric” architectures and electric/hybrid propulsion systems. To meet these challenges in the automotive industry, significant work has been done in the areas of electric, hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles. In the case of airplanes, more electric architecture , fuel cell, and hybrid propulsion strategies are the emerging trends. Recently, there is also an increasing interest in flying cars, and Electrical vertical take- off and landing vehicles (eVTOL) to be used as air taxis. Similar strategies have been adopted in Marine propulsion systems also. This presentation examines present trends and advancements in electric/hybrid vehicles, electric and hybrid aircrafts, hydrogen- based systems, and flying cars/VTOL vehicles. In addition, recent trends in the enabling technologies, power electronics and electric motors, for the advancement of the electrified transportation will be briefly presented. Bio: Kaushik Rajashekara (Fellow, IEEE) received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. In 1989, he joined the Delphi division of General Motors Corporation in Indianapolis, USA, as a Staff Project Engineer. In Delphi and General Motors, he held various lead technical and managerial positions, and was a Technical Fellow and the Chief Scientist for developing propulsion and power electronics systems for electric, hybrid, and fuel cell vehicle systems. In 2006, he joined Rolls-Royce Corporation, as a Chief Technologist for electric systems for electric and hybrid aircraft systems. In August 2012, he joined as a Distinguished Professor of Engineering with the University of Texas at Dallas, TX, USA. Since September 2016, he has been a Distinguished Professor of engineering in University of Houston, Houston, TX, USA. He has authored or coauthored over 300 papers in international journals and conferences, has 37 US and 15 foreign patents, and has written one book. He has given over 200 invited presentations in international conferences and universities. He has received a number of awards including the 2022 Global Energy Prize, 2021 IEEE Medal on Environment & Safety Technologies, and 2013 IEEE Richard Harold Kaufmann Award for his contributions to electrification of transportation and renewable energy. He was elected as a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering in 2012, , a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors in 2015, and an International Fellow of Indian (2013), Chinese (2021), and Japanese (2024) Academies of Engineering. His research interests include power/energy conversion, transportation electrification, renewable energy, and microgrid systems. To overcome the ever-increasing design challenges of radio front end for wireless communications, extensive research efforts have been devoted to advance the RF transmitters in recent years at both industry and academia. This talk provides an introduction on the innovations leading to more advanced digital and intelligent RF transmitters. First, an overview and the technical challenges on designing and implementation of All-digital transmitter will be introduced covering both hardware and software aspects, including active devices, switching-mode PA operation, efficient and spurious-free power encoding of signals. Then advanced techniques with demonstrators of All-digital transmitter and All-digital phased array will be showcased. In addition, Machine learning and AI techniques applied to enhance the agility and performance (i.e. operating bandwidth, efficiency, linearity) of (digital) radio transmitter will be highlighted. This talk will provide an overview of deep learning applications in nanophotonic device design, focusing on generative neural networks. To achieve inverse design in nanophotonics, optimization of tens of thousands of 'pixels' is typically required. The adjoint method, a popular local optimization approach, often necessitates multiple optimization runs. Generative deep learning builds on existing data to generate new designs with specified target specifications such as transmission/reflection spectra. For instance, datasets optimized for discrete wavelengths (e.g., wavelength splitters) or splitting ratios (e.g., power splitters) can be used to generate devices with arbitrary wavelength or splitting ratios. We demonstrate examples using conditional variational autoencoders (CVAE) and denoising diffusion probabilistic models (DDPM) for applications in planar waveguide devices, metasurface gratings, and plasmonic gratings. Additionally, we introduce the concept of latent space optimization and transfer learning. Engineers traditionally use deterministic modeling in their tasks, but challenges for developing and optimizing products and processes inspire us to venture beyond deterministic to probabilistic or stochastic modeling. In this continuation from the prior presentation, a case study applying predictive engineering for the optimization of 4 requirements for an integrated circuit (Integrated Alternator Regulator for automobiles) will be shared. Deterministic models were derived by using design of experiments (DOE) and response surface modeling (RSM) in concert with circuit simulations. These deterministic models were melded with probabilistic modeling using Monte Carlo Simulation and Variance Transmission. Yield Surface Modeling™ will be introduced and shared and applied for stochastic co-optimization of the four requirements of the design. Unlike application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), FPGAs can be programmed and reprogrammed after manufacturing using hardware description languages (HDLs), enabling rapid prototyping and iterative design processes. FPGAs can be found in telecommunications, signal processing, aerospace, and other scenarios demanding high-performance computing, parallel processing, low-latency data processing, and real-time operations. The newest trends include integrating FPGAs with systems on chip (SoCs) for implementing low-latency machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence. This Advanced Digital Design course is an intensive program designed to build upon foundational concepts in digital logic design and equip students with the skills needed to implement robust high-speed ML algorithms on an FPGA. Through a combination of theoretical lectures, hands-on exercises, and practical projects, students will explore advanced FPGA topics encompassing architectural considerations, signal integrity, timing analysis, and optimization techniques to achieve reliable and efficient high-speed designs. IEEE NY JOINT MTT AP PHO & NANO CHAPTER – SEMINAR: Light-Matter Interactions at the Nanoscale: Harmonic Generation from Metal/Vacuum Interfaces and Novel Aspects of Radiation Reaction
In noble metals a patina of free electrons extends out into free space and vanishes within a fraction of an atomic diameter. We discuss the possibility and consequences of the existence of such a free electron layer, acting as an epsilon-near-zero medium. Just as classical macroscopic electrodynamics cannot discern either individual atoms or field fluctuations between atoms, it is similarly unable of discriminating the rapid decay of the free electron spill-out density within a distance that is less than an atomic diameter. The best one can do is treat the boundary as a layer of free charge density having thickness equal to a single spatial discretization step of unknown average density, equivalent to a delta-function. Under these conditions we predict that if this boundary layer exists it will display enhanced pump absorption and decreased nonlinear thresholds. Finally, we will discuss a new formulation of radiation reaction that supplants the Abraham-Lorenz classical theory and applies to non-relativistic electrons of finite size. The introduction of an explicit reaction force in the Newtonian equation of motion leads to a new hydrodynamic equation that offers novel insight on the influence of damping in generic plasmas, metal-based and dielectric nanostructures. In response to the exponential growth of global data generation, IEEE has initiated two groundbreaking projects stemming from the IEEE/TA Data Strategy Ad Hoc committee. These initiatives harness IEEE's vast dataset resources to accelerate research and development, facilitate global data sharing, and create value for members and customers worldwide. The first project, IEEE DataPort, is a searchable repository of research datasets. Key features include: · Ability to link datasets to authors' IEEE publications · Open upload system for researchers · Metadata and quality screening process · Assignment of Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to datasets Dataport has a rapidly growing user base of over 8.5 million, with 20,000 new users daily. The second project is an AI/ML-powered search and knowledge engine that utilizes Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) technologies. The pilot program, "AskIEEE," allows users to pose questions in natural language and receive answers derived from IEEE's comprehensive information database. One significant outcome of these efforts was Standardization of test and model validation efforts for generating units and their controls. In this discussion, Mr. Leonard will focus on: 1. Model validation test philosophy, protocol, schedule and operational impacts 2. Modeling accuracy issues 3. Lessons learned over the course of this model validation effort, including those related to Inverter-Based Resource (IBR) modeling. Dan Leonard founded Peregrine Engineering Consulting in 2018. Prior to Peregrine, since 1991 he worked at GE Schenectady, where his work focused on test, analysis and control of dynamic behavior in electric utility and industrial power systems. For the past twenty-five+ years he has specialized in power plant dynamic performance testing, focusing on evaluation of turbine-generator controls performance and interaction with the power system. Mr. Leonard is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of New York, most other US States and Provinces in CANADA. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and has co-authored several conference papers on power electronic applications, voltage stability and artificial intelligence applications in power systems, and was an associate editor and contributing author for a handbook on HVDC applications published by EPRI. The IEEE North Jersey Section Communications Society Chapter is offering a course entitled "DEEP LEARNING WITH APPLICATIONS". Deep learning is a transformative field within artificial intelligence and machine learning that has revolutionized our ability to solve complex problems in various domains, including computer vision, natural language processing, and reinforcement learning. This hands-on course on deep learning is designed to provide students with an understanding how these amazing successes are made possible by drawing inspiration from the way that brains, both human and otherwise, operate. Students will gain a comprehensive foundation in the principles, techniques, and applications of deep neural networks. Learning how to solve real data-set based applications will teach students how to really apply deep learning with Python programming software. Participants will be asked to design and train deep neural networks to perform tasks such as image classification using commonly available data sets. However, participants are encouraged to apply the techniques from this course to other data sets according to their interests. Discuss with the instructor in order to propose your own project. More importantly, this will set the foundations for understanding and developing Generative AI applications. Statistical software (Python, Scikit-learn) and Deep Learning Frameworks (Pytorch, TensorFlow) will be used throughout the course for the exploration of different learning algorithms and for the creation of appropriate graphics for analysis. Learning objectives: Subjects covered include these and other deep learning related materials: artificial neural networks, training deep neural networks, RNN, CNN, image recognition, natural language processing, GANs, data processing techniques, and NN architectures. The course is intended to be subdivided into 3-hour sessions. Overview: Dan provides simple, straight-forward navigation through the multiple configurations and options, providing a best-practices approach for quickly getting up to speed using Python for modelling and analysis for applications in signal processing and digital design verification. Students will be using the Anaconda distribution, which combines Python with the most popular data science applications, and Jupyter Notebooks for a rich, interactive experience. The course begins with basic Python data structures and constructs, including key “Pythonic” concepts, followed by an overview and use of popular packages for scientific computing enabling rapid prototyping for system design. During the course students will create example designs including a sigma delta converter and direct digital synthesizer both in floating point and fixed point. This will include considerations for cycle and bit accurate models useful for digital design verification (FPGA/ASIC), while bringing forward the signal processing tools for frequency and time domain analysis. Jupyter Notebooks: This course makes extensive use of Jupyter Notebooks which combines running Python code with interactive plots and graphics for a rich user experience. Jupyter Notebooks is an open-source web-based application (that can be run locally) that allows users to create and share visually appealing documents containing code, graphics, visualizations and interactive plots. Students will be able to interact with the notebook contents and use “take-it-with-you” results for future applications in signal processing. Target Audience: This course is targeted toward users with little to no prior experience in Python, however familiarity with other modern programming languages and an exposure to object-oriented constructs is very helpful. Students should be comfortable with basic signal processing concepts in the frequency and time domain. Familiarity with Matlab or Octave is not required, but the equivalent operations in Python using the NumPy package will be provided for those students that do currently use Matlab and/or Octave for signal processing applications. Benefits of Attending / Goals of Course: Attendees will gain an overall appreciation of using Python and quickly get up to speed in best practice use of Python. Please join us for the fall foliage hike. Bring lunch and good hiking boots. We will be hiking Welch and Dickey off the Route 49 in Thornton NH. Meet at 9:45 in the Welch and Dickey parking lot. Hike starts at 10. Look for the IEEE banner. There are 3 options: Option 1 Full hike 4.4 miles loop through picturesque ledges with spectacular views. This hike is moderate to challenging. Option 2 First Ledges. This hike is for hikers who want to experience the beautiful views of New Hampshire foliage, but may not be interested in climbing ledges. The distance is about one mile out. Have lunch or snack at the first ledges and enjoy spectacular views. Climb back down while the main group heads for the rockier part. Option 3 For the non-hikers, drop off the hikers and drive 5 more minutes along Route 49 to the beautiful Waterville Valley. --------------------------------------------------------------- Finish the hike with some food and socializing. Many physics laws and mathematical rules are insensitive to order. For example, the addition of numbers disregards the sequence order, e.g., 1+2+3=3+1+2. However, such a commutative property does not always hold. When the outcomes of a set of operations depend on the execution order, they can become “non-Abelian.” In the 20th century, non-Abelian mathematical frameworks have played profound roles in formulating many fundamental laws of modern physics. Famous examples include the classification of hadrons and the unification of electro-weak interactions. Classical physics, such as mechanics, electromagnetism, and optics, were well established before non-Abelian theories came into play. However, this does not mean non-Abelian effects are absent in the classical world. One prominent example is a Rubik’s Cube—the moves made on the cube do not always commute: two sequential moves done in different orders do not necessarily get the color palettes to the same layout. We then ask: how and when non-Abelian phenomena arise in classical waves? Delving into this question, our recent works leverage Berry-phase matrices, which capture the adiabatic evolution of multiple states, to realize non-Abelian braiding in acoustics and photonics . Here, the braiding operations are implemented using coupled waveguide arrays, which are adiabatically modulated along the guiding direction to enforce a multi-state Berry-phase matrix that swaps the modal dwell sites. The evolution of the guiding modes maps to the generators of braid groups. The non-Abelian characteristics are revealed by switching the order of two distinct braiding operations involving at least three modes. Next generation of wireless power transfer network of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS
This talk highlights the next generation of wireless power transfer (WPT) network concept that is scalable, safe, and efficient and can be deployed in a UAS by incorporating waveform engineering, electromechanical beamforming, integrated phased-array antenna, and transmitter (TX)/receiver (RX) co-design. Although interest in radiative (far-field) WPT using beamforming has been growing rapidly because of its capability to energize a large number of autonomous devices, most of these works are still in the theoretical phase without any practical implementation. This talk presents the implementation of a distributed beamforming network using a bottom-up approach (from the antenna to the inter-connected network) that is highly important for addressing the challenges associated with a dynamically changing environment. Practical system-level implementation strategies and multi-scale and multi-technique approaches to building a resilient WPT network for UAVs will be discussed. First, the challenges associated with the dual approach of electrical beamforming and the mechanical steering of the TX antennas to maximize the RF-RF link efficiency will be discussed. Secondly, an investigation of the efficient rectifier circuitry designed on-chip as well as commercial off-the-shelf components (COTS) to maximize the power conversion efficiency RF-DC efficiency will be presented. Finally, future research directions on increasing the power transfer distance to scale up the amount of power delivered to the load for the proposed wireless power beaming network system will be highlighted. These S/C span a great swathe from hardware to software, including electronic devices, solar/wind energy production, power transmission, control theory, image compression, signal processing, and computer architecture. One could say this moves from applied physics to applied math. However, this session drills down to predominantly 1 of these societies, the electron device society, where the field of semiconductor materials and devices thrives. So, with the USA's Chips and Science Act to onshore semiconductor chip manufacturing, what does this mean to you and your communities. First, the Chips portion supports semiconductor companies to build or expand domestic chip production. The Science portion aims to perform workforce development to populate those factories. Where will this new workforce come from and what do you need to do to prepare for your future? This talk aims to take a critical look at the opportunities before you in the semiconductor industry. The Zero Trust framework, based on the idea of verifying and authorizing access at every step, regardless of user location or device, offers a solid solution. Adding Artificial Intelligence to this approach makes it even more effective by enabling smarter threat detection, continuous monitoring, and adaptive security measures. This talk looks at how AI improves zero-trust networks, focusing on AI algorithms like Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) that can track network behavior over time to spot unusual activity and potential threats. AI also helps prioritize which threats need the most attention using risk scoring, making it easier to handle the most serious risks first.
