Challenges in Natural Language Processing Applications

Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/405055

Join the Buffalo Computer Society Chapter in welcoming Distinguished Visitor, Maiga Chang, on Thursday February 29, at 2 PM CST/4 PM ET, when he gives a virtual presentation for our second installment on the Neural Networks of AI. Prof. Maiga Chang's research group uses Natural Language Processing techniques including n-grams and part-of-speech tags to analyze large datasets like CORD-19, DBpedia, and Google Books to build an online summary generation system (https://ask4summary.vipresearch.ca/) and Moodle plugin Ask4Summary (https://moodle.org/plugins/block_ask4summary) that are capable of reading articles regarding Coronavirus and course content and provide summary for users’ questions. This talk will explain to audience what and how we have done step-by-step to reach the goal; how the fundamental service like the valid n-grams identifier service (https://ngrampos.vipresearch.ca/) that can help developers and researchers; what are the challenges we have encountered; and what are the plans and potentional ways for investigating and overcoming those challenges. At the end, Ask4Summary has reached 82.69% success rate for providing quick (0.766 seconds in average) responses of course relevant questions and is available for users in interactive web, Moodle plug-in form, and Python library. With the help of Statistical and Neural NLP, our Authorship Fingerprinting research is capable to correctly distinguish the works created by GPT 3.5, GPT 4, and human authors with recall rate 98.84% in our preliminary study. The Cleveland Open Source Modular Implant Innovators Community (COSMIIC)

Room: lower level conference room, 6050 Oak Tree Boulevard, Independence, Ohio, United States, 44131, Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/399299

This talk will introduce the Cleveland Open Source Modular Implant Innovators Community (COSMIIC) – see cosmiic.org. The overall goal of COSMIIC is to establish an open source, modular network of active implantable devices for use in pre-clinical and early feasibility human research, and to provide ongoing support for this technology through a vibrant, sustainable community of users. The concept is based on our established platform ecosystem, the Networked Neuroprosthesis (NNP), which provides a solid technological platform with an established regulatory status for human use. The COSMIIC concept is being established through major funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Stimulating Peripheral Activity to Relieve Conditions (SPARC) Program. The project includes a broad investigative team in Cleveland at CWRU, MHS, VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System, and the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine; as well as investigators at the University of Michigan and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Speaker(s): Kevin Kilgore Agenda: 5:30 for registration and refreshments 6pm presentation followed by questions and answers. The presentation will be livestreamed. Room: lower level conference room, 6050 Oak Tree Boulevard, Independence, Ohio, United States, 44131, Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/399299

Documentary Night: The Sun Queen

Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/401391

For nearly 50 years, chemical engineer and inventor Mária Telkes applied her prodigious intellect to harnessing the power of the sun. She designed and built the world’s first successfully solar-heated modern residence and identified a promising new chemical that, for the first time, could store solar heat like a battery. And yet, along the way, she was undercut and thwarted by her boss and colleagues — all men — at MIT. Despite these obstacles, Telkes persevered and, upon her death in 1995, held more than 20 patents. She is now recognized as a visionary pioneer in the field of sustainable energy. An unexpected and largely forgotten heroine, Telkes was remarkable in her vision and tenacity — a scientist and a woman in every way ahead of her time. Her research and innovations from the 1930s through the ‘70s continue to shape how we power our lives today AFTER the documentary - we can have a brief discussion session. NOTE: You must supply your own soda pop and popcorn! :-) Trivia may also follow, so bring your Jeopardy hats too! Agenda: 6:00 PM - Welcome and Introductions, Chapter business update; (on your own) Pizza, Popcorn and Soda Pop 6:05 PM - Documentary 7:05 PM - End of Documentary; Start of Q & A; Group Discussion 7:15 PM - Wrap Up ALL times are in EST/EDT (UTC-4 or UTC-5) depending upon local day light savings times in when effect Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/401391
