Metamaterials (MTMs) are synthetic electromagnetic materials possessing unique properties not found in natural materials. Their introduction has spurred the creation of innovative circuits with enhanced components. One notable metamaterial-based design is the composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) leaky-wave antennas (LWAs). These antennas offer continuous frequency-dependent beam scanning from backfire to end-fire with an accurate broadside beam. Using a straightforward feeding mechanism, they also ensure excellent impedance matching throughout their operational range. The CRLH LWAs' ability to map frequency to space means unknown target locations can be pinpointed by analyzing the spectral components of the returning wave. This paves the way for real-time detection, with data acquisition speeds mainly determined by the signal source's frequency sweep rate. The sensor's field of view is also expanded thanks to the wide scanning angle of CRLH LWAs. Such features enable applications like swift 2-D beamforming, expansive real-time remote sensing, vital sign monitoring, motion detection, and microwave imaging. Additionally, applying spatiotemporal modulation to CRLH LWAs can generate harmonic waves and enhance physical layer security, promoting safer wireless communication. The talk begins with a review of the fundamental and technological limiting factors to the spectral purity of integrated RF oscillators, and then proposes circuit solutions to break the phase noise barrier in silicon technology. Phase noise can be scaled by resorting to the multi-core approach, provided mismatches among multiple oscillators are carefully considered. As an example, a 16-core (voltage-controlled) oscillator demonstrates -130dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset from 20 GHz minimum phase. A more elegant and efficient approach is then introduced. Leveraging the series resonance of a tank, the remarkably lower resistance rises considerably the tank active power, thus enabling a remarkable improvement on the spectral purity. Two 10GHz BiCMOS VCOs exploiting the concept are proposed. The measured minimum phase noise is −138 dBc/Hz at 1-MHz offset with 600mW from 1.2-V supply. Experimental results demonstrate the lowest phase noise ever reported by fully integrated RF oscillators in a silicon technology. This webinar covers the practical aspects of measuring noise figures on a vector network analyzer (VNA) using the cold source technique. It builds on the concepts introduced earlier in this noise figure series. First, we review the method of the cold source noise figure measurement, pointing out the various parameters the VNA needs to measure in order to calculate the noise figure. This leads naturally to a discussion of measurement challenges, where we find some things are easy to control and measure while others are more difficult. We introduce best practices and techniques for each task to improve the noise figure measurement results. Demonstrations follow, where the instrument is configured for a noise figure measurement, then calibrated, and finally, the noise figure of a low noise amplifier is measured. Since 2015 there has been a great effort to develop ethical guidelines for AI in the IEEE, leading to a series of documents on Ethically Aligned Design for Intelligent and Autonomous Systems, including analysis of ethically aligned design for business and education. In addition to these analysis and policy documents, IEEE's Standards Association has created a series of standards for the ethical use of AI, the 7000 standard series. These standards have influenced international AI and ethics public policy, including a Digital Services Framework Based on the Rights Principles for Children. In this talk we will look at IEEE's efforts in promoting and defining ethical design with AI and its applications in advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. The Providence Section is hosting an afternoon of sailing on July 13, 2024, from 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm aboard the three-masted schooner Liberté out of Falmouth Harbor. You'll sail in the general area of Nantucket and Vineyard Sounds. Advance non-refundable reservations are required. Prices: Student Member and one guest: $20 each; All other members and one guest: $35 each; Additional guests: $40 each; Young guests, age 7-18: $20 each; Children: age 6 and younger: no cost. These prices are the same as the last time this event was held in 2023. There is very limited parking on site. Those arriving by hired transportation will receive beverage coupons. If driving, please utilize your smallest vehicle or please carpool. There is a parking attendant who will receive you and assist with parking. The Liberté is a magnificent three-masted schooner which plies the beautiful waters of Cape Cod and the Chesapeake Bay. During the summer it ties up at the Clam Shack, just inside the mouth of the harbor in Falmouth, MA. It is 74 feet long with a spacious deck and plentiful on-deck seating including room for wheelchairs. Soft drinks, beer, wine and mixed drinks are available on board at the cash bar. Attendees may wish to bring along their own snacks, light food or water. We have a liquor license which prohibits our guests from bringing their own alcohol. We keep our prices reasonable. Keep in mind that it is often cooler on the water than on land, particularly on windy days. You might want to bring along a sweater or jacket. Comfortable shoes are definitely encouraged, high heels are not. Sunblock is also recommended. In this talk, we focus on the recent signal processing strategies and challenges associated with the development of sensing and communication systems that coexist with the vehicles and road infrastructure deployed in a given area. We consider a broad definition of coexistence, which covers joint communication and sensing, collaborative communication and sensing, and also interference. We consider an aspect of the coexistence paradigm where the two systems support each other beyond interference mitigation such as sensor-aided communications and communications-aided sensing. This opens up the avenue for the development of multivehicle sensor fusion strategies. We describe recent works that define topologies for combining radar and communication functionalities into the same equipment, drawing on the spectrum scarcity and possible gains from the reuse of resources. In particular, we focus on the joint design of a waveform to mitigate interference, including communications-centric waveforms (OFDMA and 802.11ad), radar-centric waveforms (PMCW), or unified waveforms achieving optimal trade-offs between the two systems. Mathematical Artificial Intelligence By Prof. Shui Yu University of Technology Sydney Abstract： Artificial Intelligence is a leading topic in both academia and industry, and explainable AI (XAI) is a critical and hot topic of the field. However, we noticed that XAI is not the core of the business, and we expect deterministic AI models. In this talk, we will report the current landscape of XAI, and then introduce the next stage after XAI – Mathematical AI (MAI). We will mainly present how the mathematical tools, such as differential geometry and group theory, are used build deterministic AI models. At the end of the talk, we will present some cases of the application of MAI. We hope the talk will shed light on the promising field for interested audience. Space assets such as satellites, drones and spacecraft are increasingly attractive targets for adversaries ranging from individual hackers, to hacker groups and nation states. This rapid rise in the cyber threat landscape necessitates smarter cyber tools to stay ahead of our adversaries.
